First my very simple network setup: Comcast cable modem->Linksys RTP300 router Eth. cable runs from the Comcast to the "Internet" port on the RTP300 and my desktop is connected to port 1 on the RTP300. Phone and Internet connection are working flawlessly The RTP300's firmware is 1.00.60 What I'm trying to do: Setup a wireless connection for a laptop. Wireless network setup: Comcast cable modem->Linksys RTP300 router->Linksys WAP54G WAP is connected to port 3 on the RTP300. Wireless past: When I got Vonage 2 years ago, I set up a wireless network using the same configuration as above with a Linksys WAP11. It worked like a charm for a year and a half, then my old laptop started having some overheating issues so I stopped using it and took the WAP11 out of the mix. Last week I purchased a new HP laptop and a Linksys WAP54G and set up the identical wireless network that I had in the past (cable modem->RTP300->WAP). Here's where the problem begins: The WAP came with a setup disk, which I've tried to load, but in order to configure it, my desktop needs to see it in the network and it doesn't. I have used both the new WAP54G and the old WAP11 in the network setup and... nothing. I still have phone/internet connectivity with WAP in the network, but my desktop can't see the WAP. My first thought was that I had a bad port on the RTP300, so I moved the cable connecting the WAP to the RTP300 from ports 2-4 and it didn't help. To double-check the ports, I moved the cable connecting my desktop to the RTP300 from ports 1-4 and had flawless internet connectivity in all ports. I have checked and replaced cables - still can't see the WAP. I have power-cycled all devices in all possible ways and nothing. I have not purchased new phones, I'm not setup near a microwave, I have not loaded new networking software. Now I'm at a loss. I tend to believe that most computer problems can be traced back to user error or ignorance. But my setup is so simple, I think that by now I would have stumbled onto some dumb mistake that I made in the setup and corrected it. I'm hoping that someone reading this will be able to point out some simple computer ignorance on my part and get my wireless network back up and running! |
