PostPosted: Tue Mar 20, 2007 1:59 pm    Post subject: Cannot Use Both Lines At The Same Time Reply with quote Back to top

I have had Vonage for about 6 Months. I recently moved my office. I have two lines - standard business and the fax line. I am using the Linksys PAP2. I moved my office about a month ago. All of a sudden I cannot use both phone/fax line simultaneously. Before I moved I could do this. I have MORE bandwith at my new place. I have isolated the problem down to the adapter. I plugged a different phone into each port of the Linksys adapter and still have the problem.

I have a cable modem going to a DLink router and a cable from the router to the Linksys adapter.

I am totally confused as to why I am having this problem. Vonage is no help on the phone. They are in India and there is a communication barrier. I am going to have to switch back to Bellsouth, because I cannot have clients hung up on when a fax comes through the other line.

I did the speedtest and get the following results:

download: 7.61 Mbps
Upload: 738 kbps

Quality of Service: 29%
Round Trip Time: 54ms
Max Pause: 54ms

What happens if you plug the PAP2 directly into the modem? Not as a permanent thing, of course- troubleshooting only.

Steve:
Thanks for the response. Vonage called and asked about the make and model of the modem just a few minutes ago. They are going to research it.

I attempted to plug the adapter straight into the modem this morning for a few minutes, and I couldn't get the phones to work at all when I did this. There must have been some type of human error on my part when I tried this experiment. I will try it again tomorrow morning and post the result.

OK. I suspect that the modem is the real issue, but pursuing the experiment is worth a little trouble.

I plugged the adapter straight into the Netgear CG814CCR v2 Modem that Comcast provided me. The same problem persists. When I try to use both lines at the same time, then both lines terminate function and I must reset the adapter. When using the two lines at different times there is absolutely no problems.

Any word from Vonage on the modem? I suspect that for once they're on the right track.

If you have a cooperative friend with broadband, it would help if you could test the PAP2 on his/her connection. That would eliminate any potential issue with the PAP2.

Vonage has sent an email saying that the modem given to me by Comcast Netgear CG814CCR v2 has a firewall by default. They want to know if this is the first time I have used this modem. I replied "Yes it is the first time."

No response from them on what to do. I will have to wait another 24 Hours for them to reply to that message.

The problem has been solved!!!

The Netgear CG814CCR v2 modem that Comcast gave me has a default firewall setting that was blocking me from using both phone lines at a time.

Vonage emailed me instructions on how to fix this problem. However the instructions were totally wrong. Wrong IP Address, wrong id and password, and wrong menu instructions.

I was able to figure out after doing some searching on google.

Oh, well. At least customer service identified the problem correctly. I suppose that's something.
