PostPosted: Sun Mar 18, 2007 8:18 pm    Post subject: file sharing between wired and wireless isn't working Reply with quote Back to top

i have the VWR dlink router from Vonage.
i'm trying to share files over my network.
if i use two wired computers, they share fine.
if i use two wireless computers, they share fine.
it won't let me share files between a wired and wireless computer.

i called Vonage and they said:

imagine it like a triangle, the wired computer the router and the wireless computer... since there is no direct line between them, you can't share files between them.

i find this hard to belive.
i set up a wireless router at my girlfriend's house last week (not a Vonage router) and she shares files just fine between her wired computer and her wireless laptop.

I don't know why it isn't working, but you're correct. The answer you got from customer service makes no sense. What does the VWR's client table say about things when you have the computers running? The wired and wireless should be on the same subnet. Are they?

"called Vonage and they said:

I'm absolutely appalled that they even said that. Tier 1 must REALLY be a boatload of idiots if they can't understand the concept of a NETWORK. If that answer is part of their script, well, holy crap. This is probably one of the worst we've heard.

oh it gets worse. that was second tier tech support who told me that.

so i emaied them and told them the issue.

thier response:

We understand from your email that the file sharing is not taking place between
wired
and wireless device.

We checked your account information and found that you have contacted
our Voice Support regarding the same issue and got the issue resolved.

...........
i responded to them that unless the resolution is that the device doesn't support networking then i don't believe it is resolved.

The VWR is a piece of junk. Much of what it is supposed to do, it doesn't do. Problems due primarily to crappy firmware. So it doesn't surprise me that you're having the problems you describe.

Unfortunately, the response you got from Vonage tech support doesn't surprise me either. They look for any excuse to make you go away, including incorrect answers that they hope will sound good to the novice user.

You don't have a second router in there do you? Your wired and wireless clients are all connected via the VWR Dlink... Correct? If you have another router in the mix you essentially have 2 networks that won't play nice together.

Modem -> Dlink - >wireless and wired clients.

NOT

Modem -> (some other) router -> Wired Clients -> Dlink -> wireless clients

the only router is the dlink.

so today, i swapped it out with a piece of crap 35.00 access point and everything shares fine. i think i'm going to just cancel my Vonage.

That's your privilege, of course, but please remember that the reason most people get Vonage is to save money on phone service. Unfortunately, while their equipment performs the phone service just fine, it is not very robust when it comes to networking. If you'd like to stick with it awhile, use a good router, or even your "piece of crap" and relegate the Vonage box to phone adapter duty only. Frankly, I wish Vonage would recommend that to most people and get out of the wireless router business.

i don't use the phone, i just got it to support a cool company doing cool stuff and i wanted to try it out. with support that bad though, i don't really feel like supporting it anymore.

if anyone has any ideas to try i'll give it a shot.

i thought maybe if i put heavier security on the wireless side that it would maybe start "trusting" the wireless side to talk to the wired side, but no dice.
