I know this topic is covered elsewhere but the configurations were way more complicated. I simply have the phone adapter with no router. When I plug it in my web server and ftp server can't been seen from the inside or outside. Any suggestions? |

The problem is VT1005 specific. The device is a kind of router. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is not. When it is a route, you can access your server from the outside. When it is not, you can't access your router from the inside (!!!!!)
As a router, in order to run a web server behind the VT1005 you have to enable "port forwarding". The Vonage way to do this is:
You would need to open the port required for your webserver. Here are the steps that you need to take on how open port 80, 21 or any other:
1. You will need to have a computer connected to the PC port on the MTA 2. Make sure that your computer gets an IP address of 192.168.102.xxx, where xxx can be any number (in the range of the VT1005). 3. As long as it has an IP in this format, go to http://192.168.102.1 from any web browser. To access this page you will need to have your computer connected to the PC port on the Phone Adapter since this page is hosted by the MTA device. 4. Click on the Advanced menu option 5. Fill in the IP address of 192.168.102.100 (or the one of your computer - the one you use to run your servers). 6. Fill in the port number (usually 80 for Web and 21 for FTP. If your IP blocks port 80, you already use an other one to run your server) 7. Select "Both" for Transport 8. After inputting the settings, click on Save Changes.
Doing so, you will be able to access your web site and FTP site from the outside. Great.
But the VT1005 is not a real router. So the rest of the world will now be able to access your web site. But you can't. See that thread: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic1798.html. I tried 1001 solutions before concluding the VT1005 was the problem. No more essays and errors. I contacted Vonage on that problem and they offered me to replace my VT1005 with a RT31P2 (which is a Linksys router with 2 Vonage phone line ports). Because RT31P2 is a real router, I think (I hope) it will work.
If you find a better way, tell me. I'm really curious about that issue. |

Bye Bye VT1005. Hello Linksys RT31P2.
I received yesterday from Vonage the Linksys router RT31P2. 10 minutes later, I can access my sites from the inside. This new hardware seems to solve the problem.
A router with 2 phone ports seems to be better than 2 phone ports with an "almost about" router (VT1005). |
