I know I'm completely being overly cautious by I've been checking 25 friends/family who are waiting to jump off of Bell Canada based on me being the test pilot (so much pressure on me huh?
I've check out issues with
- 911 vs. e911
- home and business security monitoring via next alarm
- UPS backups
- dryloop or nakedloop for my Bell Sympatico Highspeed which is free with Bell Sympatico High Speed.
So far everything seems to be a go. I'm just waiting for a response from Nextalarm
I downloaded myvoipspeed PC software which is the same as the Vonage online speed test and here are my results. Does everything seem ok based on these numbers. My Jitter seems to range from 3.4ms to 6.2ms depending on the time of day.
Also my download speed seems slow but bell sympatico tells me that it's based on how close I am to their station. (not sure if I believe that. It does say "up to 5mbps" they say that's the best I can get based on my location which is in Toronto
Here are my results
Date / time: Mar 17, 2007 12:29:33 PM
Download speed: 1.33 Mbps
Upload speed: 494 Kbps
Quality of service: 99 %
Round trip time: 23 ms
Max pause: 29 ms
Jitter: 3.4 ms
Packet loss: 0.0 %
Route hops: 11
Thanks in advance for any input.

I Jeff I answered you on the U.S board.
Not much action over here on the Canadian board.
Let us know if you switch to Vonage. |

Jeff,
Your download speed seems a bit slow but other than that the numbers look pretty good. The jitter and latency are well within line to have great quality audio.
e911 - The difference is that, like a cell phone you will be asked to confirm your address when calling. On the plus side as long as you have updated your address information with Vonage, 911 will be dispatched to the registered address even if no one can speak.
Alarm - Some work, some do not, and others can be bypassed. Personally I would look for another means to connect with your alarm company as VoIP is not ideal.
UPS - Great idea that anyone worried about their phone not working during a power outage should have.
Dry Loop - Usually free, offered by almost all companies.

hey jeff
I resell the vonage service in a retail enviroment, I always tell my clients to use the assigned number for a month until they are happy with the service then move (port) their number over to Vonage.
