I do a lot of traveling in Europe, (Hungary, Croatia, Germany and the U.K) and where we stay they never have free internet in the rooms. I can go down to the business center but not very private there for conversations. I have an unlocked cell phone that works in Europe and I buy sim cards, sometimes it is very inexpensive to call back to Canada.
That is one of the advantages of the WiFi phone - if the business center has an open AP, then you don't need to sit "in" the business center - just be near it. That is the case where there is often free WiFi "in the lobby" - which is also where the business center may be. The WiFi phone has a feature where it "chirps" when it finds an access point and successfully registers - so you know when you can make a call if you just have the thing in your pocket.
A pre-paid GSM SIM is a fine idea, and works well for incoming calls (even forwarded from a US Voip number) which is a whole lot cheaper than roaming. For outbound - GSM still costs US$0.30 per minute or so - which is cheaper than the hotel rates, but not close to Voip rates.
Yes you can take your Vonage device with you even outside the country. As long as their is high speed internet connection you're good to go! For business center yeah some don't have so you need a wifi connection and bringing your laptop would be the only way to use the service. Do I make sense? Sowe just woke up or should I say I just had an hour's sleep.
