I live in a big building in NYC (London Terrace) with its own ISP, called LTGSpeed. This means that connection speeds vary anywhere from 500bps to 2Mbps, depending on the time of day and my neighbour's internet usage. In other words, it ****.

I've had Vonage working for only a few months, and it's never been great, I just haven't had the time to troubleshoot to a large extent. I'm unable to make a call without the audio dropping out intermittently.

I performed a test with my Powerbook hooked up directly to my Motorola VT2142. Here are the results:

My configuration is: ISP WAN --> Motorola VT2142 --> Apple AirTunes Express.

The VT2142 boots up normally, however when the boot is complete, BOTH line 1 and line 2 LEDs are illuminated, despite the fact that I have no phone plugged in during the start up procedure.

After the Vonage modem is booted, I'm using a 5.7GHz cordless phone with the base around 4 ft away from the modem, although plugged into the same power outlet.

My wife works from home and really wants a home phone. She's losing her patience and is asking me to investigate other Voip solutions, which will only add to the pain.

Any ideas what would be causing these symptoms?

My instinct tells me that your building being as large as it is, probably does not give you any QoS abilities to make your phone conversation the highest priority. As a result, your phone calls have to wait in line with all the other internet requests from various computer users in your building.

Unlike a cable or dsl connection, your building is probably using one (or however many) T1 line and having it shared by everyone in the building. As a result, there must be some switches that handle everyone traffic. But since it's all handled from one location, it does not give any priority to you over anyone else, hence the bottleneck there.

If you have cable or dsl, at least there are some guarantees in terms of bandwidth reserved for you. I hope this clarifies your situation. I really think that getting a different provider will make little difference.

One thing you can try is to lower the bandwidth usage, go to www.vonage.com and login into your account. Then go to features and you will find bandwidth saver. Try the 50 kbps setting and see if that helps.

I normally keep mine at 50 kbps.
