Goodbye Vonage. Tried it for four days. Dropped calls, poor voice quality, and it crashed my home network. Tried adjusting the bandwidth settings to no avail. No interest in further troubleshooting, as IMHO, a phone is a phone and should just work. Never thought I'd say it, but I'm going back to Embarq, whom I despise. I hope they get this figured out someday - I'm pretty disappointed. |

Sorry it didn't work out for you. Unfortunately, VoIP performance depends utterly on both the VoIP provider and the broadband internet provider. As long as those services are provided by different companies, getting problems resolved will never be quite as simple as we would all like it to be.
If you decide that you would like to fiddle with it a bit more, please post the technical details listed in the sticky message at the top of the forum. |

Most likely you didn't have proper port forwarding in place. Don't give up so easily, we have 2.2 million customers for a reason. If your modem has router capabilities, make sure you log in and either DMZ to your device or set up the port forwarding by following directions at http://portforward.com or contact tech support and we would be glad to assist you in the process. |

Please stop telling people they need port forwarding for Vonage to work, it's not true. |

You do NOT NEED PORT FORWARDING or any DMZ settings.
I have had vonage for 1 1/2 years and it has worked with no router settings. All I had to do was plug it in.
Where did this port forwarding thing start? |

Sorry you've been misinformed gentlemen, but certain modem/gateways with router capabilities, as well as select third party routers your device connects to the internet through need to have port forwarding in place or you will have dropped calls, one way audio, choppy audio etc. Just because you may have had success with your setup does not mean droves of people are dismayed with the service because they do not know how to set up port forwarding with their devices. |

Sorry, you're just flat out incorrect. |

Actually, I'm 100% correct. After working on the phones for months dealing with hundreds of cases on the issue, I know where I stand. I'm not saying it's necessary in every case, but most likely it will help. I'm not exactly sure why people find this information offensive - but to misinform people to not do something that might help them improve their service makes no sense. |

Guys, let's not grill von_db a NEW Forum Member although he seems very sure of himself maybe he has the right since he claims to be working for the NJ office. Anyway, he means no harm and is right in one thing...EVERY information that could help ANY Vonage users would be surely appreciated here especially by those who are having problems with their set-up. Although one thing is not 100% correct and that is-- PORT Forwarding is NOT necessary in all set-up. Any other explanations or suggestions to help others who are using Vonage and still are having a bad connection? Of course when I ask that question it would mean EXCLUDING setting up or mentioning port forwarding. |

Port forwarding/DMZ most CERTAINLY helps in SOME cases. The reason is many NAT firewalls wreak havoc on VoIP. Some flat out block ports. Here it is from the horse's mouth so to speak.
