Had Vonage for several weeks. Once every day or two I get circuits busy (fast busy) when attempting outbound calls to local non-vonage subscribers.

In addition, we still have our Verizon line with it forwarded to our Vonage line. Still have one phone connected to the Verizon line, and when people call our Verizon number it gives a brief ring (to remind you it's forwarded) and then the Vonage phones ring.

Once or twice a day the verizon phone will ring then nothing on the Vonage phones. My suspicion is that the forward is hitting circuits busy, too. I need to catch the next calll after one of these episodes and ask them if they called earlier and got circuits busy (so far my wife always gets the next call and she won't ask).

Anyway, it looks like Vonage has a shortage of gateway connections with the PSTN.

I can count on one hand the numbe of circuits busy I've gotten over the years with Verizon, including long distance.

While you may be correct that the problem is in the number of interconnections, don't be too quick to blame Vonage. First, you would need to know where Vonage his its connection into the POTS system. Then you would need to know how Verizon is routing the call once it is forwarded or how the call is routed to Verizon. I have actually seen a case where it has more to do with the POTS interconnection to other POTS systems who actually have the connection to Vonage.

Also, who is your ISP? Are you sure you are not having ISP problems. I have seen a case where an ISP is having network traffic problems and it will give the results you mention, especially when Vonage's server is not able to see your adapter. Do you have a back-up number set up for when your network is not working.

If you have had better luck with Verizon than with Vonage you are truly an exception to the normal. Either way, I hope these suggestions help a little so you can ask some questions. There will be others with better ideas respond.

I'm not the first to bring this up on the forum.

The calls in question are all intra-lata which is almost exclusively Verizon. I am also in an area where I could port my number to Verizon should I choose to do so. The only inter-ilec connection would be if Vonage didn't have any interconnects in the 412/724 lata. Since it includes Pittsburgh PA I'd rather doubt it.

I'm using Verizon Online DSL for transport. My router is watched by our network monitoring system at work and has showed no outages during the times in question.

Yes, I have network-outage-backup set to forward to my cell phone. Again, no such forwards have been taking place.

My "luck" with Verizon consists simply of not getting circuits busy. Lots of other "unlucky" aspects of their service :-)

I'm not a vpn guru but HMMM. How is the quality of the call when connected?
I'm wondering if Verizon can detect a Vonage voice packet for an outbound or conversly, identify a call destined for a Vonage number for inbound and limit the number of gateways these packets can get service? Someone could say conspiracy theory, but with the lawsuit, I'd say Verizon would stop at nothing to make life hell for a Voip customer that wasn't there own.

On inbound calls, there are all sorts of things that can cause the call to ring once on your call-forwarded phone but not reach your Vonage phone.

1. Not enough circuits in your legacy telco C.O. to the next tandem towards Vonage.
2. Not enough circuits from that tandem to Vonage.
3. Internet glitches: do you have a network unavailability number set, and if so, are calls going to that?

The third problem is especially hard to diagnose. I've watched the packets sometimes, and I have actually seen a call arrive from Vonage, and the response go back, but apparently not reach Vonage, so Vonage thinks the call never reached me, and off it goes to the Network unavailability number.

Where did that response packet get lost? Who knows. UDP is a protocol that does not do retries, and if Vonage's SIP servers don't do the retries, a dropped SIP acknowledgement packet can kill the call.

That could be the fault of an overloaded LAN in your house, the circuit between your house and your ISP, your ISP's routers, backbone network routers, Vonage's routers, Vonage's SIP servers, etc.

Hard to say whose problem it is.
