PostPosted: Thu Mar 08, 2007 6:56 pm    Post subject: Dropped calls & calls not coming through with RoadRunner Reply with quote Back to top

I recently switched from DSL to Time Warner Road Runnercable Internet through Brighthouse since I didn't want to maintain a phone line anymore. I have had the worse service since I switched. It seems to act up the most when I'm playing online games and I get phone calls. I lose service completely, to the game, to the computer, to Vonage. I know I got a call because I'll have a voice message but the phone will never have rung. Or sometimes it rings but it's only one sided (usually I can her them but they cannot hear me). Sometimes the one sided effect will happen in the middle of a phone call that was working fine to begin with or it will drop the call completely. Also the service has been much worse (when I chooses to work). I get lots of static and sometimes a clicking. This have been very frustrating, anyone have any idea what might be happening?
Thank you in advance for any help.

I am located in Orlando Florida
I have Time Warner Road Runner cable Internet provided through brighthouse
My Vonage device is the Motorola VT2442-VD
Cable Modem - Toshiba PCX2600
Network setup - Modem-->Vonage Adapter-->PC
I'm only running one phone.

I hope things are warm down there in Tampa. I saw Brighthouse and knew that was where you were at. I am in Ohio but have to travel a lot to Odessa. I hear lots of interesting complaints about Brighthouse and I really don't understand how they fit into the equation with TimeWarner. I have Roadrunner here and we play FFXI on PS2, I am on VPN with work, my daughter is on her computer, and we have our Voip. I don't even use QoS and we don't have premium service. All seems OK. So that tells you it varies around the country.

Speaking of QoS, have you tried that option? Also, have you talked to the people at TimeWarner to run a diagnostic on your cable modem. Of course they will say there is not problem and start you out on a tier 1, etc. etc. I am not a believer that cable can cause a great amount of degradation if the cable company uses their equipment correctly. Just because you have dedicated lines with DSL, you are still sharing a single point into the backbone with your fellow DSL's. The phone company would like you to think DSL is better. I am not convinced.

As much as I hate Verizon I still have to ask, are you in the area where Verizon is offering fiber? I hear it is spreading in Tampa. Personally, I would stick to cable until I squeezed Brighthouse / TimeWarner a little. In the meantime I'll bet someone else will have some better ideas to post and I'll do some thinking.

Kitten, I'm in Orlando as well and my service is fine. I also have Road Runner via Brighthouse and the VT2442, but I have a Teryon modem.

I agree that a check of the modem is in order, but I tend to focus on the gaming issue. The Vonage boxes are not very robust as routers and don't work real well when stressed by high data throughput. Can you verify that the problem only occurs when you're gaming? Your test data doesn't reveal a problem. Can you re-run the test while a gaming exchange is underway?

Hi Steve, I believe it has occurred while not gaming (once or twice) but it is much more frequent during game play. While playing, the game will lag and disconnect (which from a gaming point of view can be very frustrating!) and my cable and data lights on my modem will turn off then fairly quickly reconnect.
I believe this corresponds with incoming phone calls since I noted a few times when it happened and compared it with my phone activity and noticed I had received phone calls that never came through on my end at that same time. In fact I noticed a lot of phone calls that never came through. I once even had a family member tell me that when they called it had said the number had been disconnected. This can't have been true since I am signed up for a year of prepaid service with Vonage.
When the calls do come through while gaming I will usually be disconnected in the same manor during the phone call. But then sometimes I can game and use my phone without any problems what-so-ever. Rolling Eyes
I have lowered my Vonage quality of service to the lowest setting with no change. Before I switched from DSL I had no similar problems with gaming or Vonage on the highest setting of quality of service. My DSL modem was a westell versalink 327W which I believe was a modem/router in one, could this have been why I had better service?

I ran the test again during gaming exchange . .

Still no explanation for the problem in your test data. At this point, I would follow Galion's suggestion about running a diagnostic on the modem. Or you might just run it down to the Road Runner place and see if they'll exchange it.

If the modem isn't the problem, I'd seriously consider getting a decent router and putting it in front of the VT2442. Plug the computers into the router and use the VT2442 as a telephone adapter only.
