After recently adding the Cisco ATA 186 to my Linksys router and successfully making and receiving calls, my WinXP machine seems to be experience these connection "hiccups" every 30 seconds or so. Basically, the WinXP machine will disconnect itself from the LAN for about a second, then reconnect itself. If I remove the ATA ethernet cable from my router, the connection hiccups stop and everything is fine. I have another machine running Win2000 plugged into the Linksys router that seems to be fine and isn't experiencing these hiccups.
It's irritating to say the least especially when I'm streaming audio or video. I've tried moving the cabling around in different ports. Upgrading the firmware of the router. I've tried setting the IP address (of the XP machine) vs. autmatic detect.
Linksys and Vonage tech support say they know of no compatibilty issues that would cause this situation. Anyone have any suggestions??
Thanks. |

ok this is a tricky one. Have you forwarded the port's on your linksys to your vonage phone? is something on your xp box trying to use the same port's as the ata 186?
I have a linksys Wifi router with a 5 port hub. Cable modem to Linksys from the linksys port's Vonage, Xp workstation corp. pro, 2000 server, FreeBsd server, and laptop via wireless with no problems at all. |

Thanks for the info. Been tinkering with this for the last few days. Forwarded the ports as you recommended, but problem still exists. Looking into other programs on my XP box that may be throwing a wrench into the system. Also, testing other boxes and laptops running different OS's to rule out other factors and hopefully pinpoint the problem.
On the flip side, I was going to upgrade my router to wireless (802.11g) anyways -- linksys, netgear, d-link, etc.. -- not sure which model at the moment. So I'll see what happens with that. |

Just to wrap this topic up. I installed my new Netgear wireless router today and the "hiccups" are gone. |

Also, on Linksys routers, you can generally set a single internal IP address as on a virtual DMZ, so port-blocking's not protecting it. If the ATA was configured as a static IP address, you could probably plug that number into this feature on the Linksys and have it work as well. |

Re: Linksys.
I've had very good results from Linksys. I have a BEFSR11 for 3 years now with no hiccups.
I also have (and use) a SMC Barricade, D-Link DI-704P, and a Belkin router. By far, the Linksys is the best for multi purpose use (gateway vs router) and detailed logging (via WallWatcher).
The other routers have their strengths but (IMHO) none of them can hold a candle to the Linksys, especially as a pure router (without NAT)
Not trying to start a flame war - just expressing my positive experiences with Linksys. |
