"Well, the whole goal is to get their Florida number in NY."

And you also knew that for another $4.99 a month, they can also have a local NY number ring on the same line on their Vonage box, so if they take the box back to Florida or overseas, then that number travels with them as well.

On the Vonage website, look for "virtual number" for more info.

We are doing exactly what the original poster is asking about. We have homes in Seattle and Phoenix, and spend six months at each place. Our Vonage lines have Seattle area codes. We simply unplug the Vonage adapter (the little D-Link box is best for this way, since it's so small) from the Seattle house and plug it in at the Phoenix house. (I keep a cable modem subscription at both places, so I can keep tabs on the homes via Internet net cams -- obviously if you want Vonage to work for this type of set up, you have to have reliable high-speed Internet.)

I also purchased a local "virtual" Phoenix number that forwards automatically to one of our lines. It's well worth the $5 a month -- a lot less confusing when you give a local number to local merchant, etc.

Anyway, this set up has been flawless, and has saved us a lot of money; the other options were to either use a cell phone or local telco call forwarding, neither of which were as ideal as Vonage. The other nice thing is that while we're driving from one place to the other (can't fly, due to dog-travel reasons), and the Vonage adapter is in the suitcase and not plugged in, the Vonage numbers automatically forward to our cell phones.

I have been using Vonage Canada in Brazil for about three years with few problems. When I travel to Canada I take the adapter there. I have a Toronto number and a couple of other Canadian virtual numbers in other area codes. Like most people here, I have the odd Vonage issue, but nothing serious. And I'm pleased to see Vonage generally continues to work well with my not-so-great Brazilian Internet provider (which is quite slow by North American standards).

I will be spending more time in Canada in the future and intend to by a second DLink adapter so I don't have to cart one around from country to country. I'll just switch adapters on the Vonage site (which I discovered is quite simple, when I replaced my original Motorola with a new DLink a couple of months ago). Adapters are so cheap now it doesn't make much sense to cart one around, particularly since bringing anything into Brazil has the potential to create customs hassles.

My wife and I are traveling nurses for the past 15 months. We have an upstate NY Vonage number, went to Delaware, plugged in my voice adapter and had service (cable modem internet), went to Colorado Springs, plugged in voice adapter (DSL) added CO Springs telephone (virtual)number, and had service, now in Florida added virtual number, plugged in voice adapter (Comcast cable) and have service. Each time I log into Vonage and change my 911 settings. I have found Vonage to change these within a few hours. You can always dial 933 to verify the type of 911 service. I purchased a LinkSys Network Optimizer and firmly believe it helps with QOS (I have deactivated it from my LinkSys wireless router that I use). No problems.
Traveling with Vonage works GREAT
