I am hoping for some networking help. I have an existing wired network with an RT31P2 router as my Vonage device and a SB4100 Motorola surfboard cable modem. I am trying to add a wireless router as I just purchased a laptop for my wife to use in various places around the home. I have tried three different wireless routers and keep encountering the same problem. I have tried a Buffalo WHR-G54S (which I tried to flash with DD-WRT, but have been unsuccessful in getting it flashed using tftp), and also a linksys WRT54GS v.6 and a D-Link I-524.

Here is the problem: I set up any of the above devices as the new, primary router with the RT31P2 connected from a LAN port of the primary router to its WAN. My Vonage Voip works fine. However, my streaming Audio and video from the primary router to my desktop through a wired, ethernet connection is lousy. Sound quality decreased, some streams keep buffering. If I go back to the RT31P2 as my primary router. Everything works fine again and streaming audio is great. If I put one of the new, wireless routers "behind" the RT31P2 as a "chained LAN," everything works, but this is a suboptimal solution, because I end up with 2 different networks between my 2 desktops and one laptop and can't easily share resources.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on with this?

Put the Vonage adapter last.

cable or dsl modem first
wireless router second
Vonage adapter last.

So, cable from cable/dsl modem to internet port on wireless router.
cable from port 1 on wireless router to blue jack on Vonage router.

If you want to hard wire to a computer run the cable from the port 1 on the Vonage router to the computer.

Make sure all 3 items are turned off first and then once connected turn on in this order:

cable/dsl modem wait until the lights are lit up, then plug in wireless router once that is finished booting plug in the Vonage adapter.

Consider using your new wireless router as just an access point, not a router. Some routers have a setting to put them into AP mode.

Otherwise, turn off NAT. Don't connect anything to the WAN port. Give it a static IP address that is in the network being used by everything else. Turn off DHCP serving (DHCP requests will pass back to your primary router for assignment). Connect one of the wireless unit's LAN switch ports to a LAN switch port on the primary.

Go to the Linksys website, go to support, help, enter the RT31P2 Linksys model # in for related articles. It will lead you to articles specific to your need. I was just doing the same thing.

Modem, Vonage Router, Wireless Router... in that order, but there is a more to it than that. You need to reconfigure your router settings on the two routers! Do it EXACTLY as Linksys stipulates! No short cuts or out of order steps.
