PostPosted: Fri Oct 29, 2004 12:51 pm    Post subject: Howto configure Linksys WRT-54G w/ traffic shaping Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all, and thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm looking to remove my Motorola VT1005V from the front of my Internet connection and put the Linksys WRT54G out there instead. I would love to take advantage of the advanced routing features that it offers.

So I downloaded the latest firmware from Linksys, which provides 'traffic shaping' or QoS prioritization. I'm look for a guide, or at least, some advice as to the best way to make this happen.

What ports whould I watch for? How can I ensure that the Voip traffic always gets priority over regular 'net traffic?

Thanks again!

I have the same VT1005V in front of my wrt54g like you. I am having problem with it forwarding everything to my router so i am going to set it up so its behind my router. With the latest firmware for that router it looks like it has Qos so you should be able to set the moto to a static ip and connect it to your wrt54g and then assign qos to that ip assigned to that router.

I have asked around and also looked in the manual of the moto Voip router and this is what i came up with:

5060-5061 (UDP)
53 (UDP)
69 (UDP)
10000-20000 (UDP)

Port 69 is for firmware downloads, so it isn't necessary unless you want to make those available to your box (probably a good idea, though). And if I recall correctly many people report the full 10000-20000 doesn't need to be opened, but I can't recall what they recommend.

I am going to try this later on so wish me luck Smile

fwiw, on the "Advanced" page of the setup for my VT1005, it says:

" NOTE -- Ports 5061 and 10000 thru 10011 are currently assigned to the voice functions of the VT1000v."

I would start by forwarding those 13 ports to the phone adapter's IP, and see how it goes from there.

Interestingly, for months I had my VT1005V behind my router wiithout forwarding any ports whatsoever, and everything seemed to work fine. I don't pretend to understand SIP well enough to explain why this might be.
