It worked for a couple of months and then it stopped working. The VT1000v did not want to connect to the DSL modem anymore. I guess I received new firmware on the VT1000v. If not I don't know what happened.
Exchanged the VT1000v, new unit, same problem. Tried all variations, PPPoE on modem. PPPoE on VT1000v, bridged mode. Nothing worked. With PPPoE on the modem and no public IP the green light on the VT1000v does turn on and stops blinking, but I can only make one single call. After that one line is dead and the other one has dial tone that does not stop when dialing. There is also no Internet connection on the LAN side in that mode.
I almost gave up on Vonage and as a last attempt I plugged the WAN port in a router located on the other end of a wireless bridge to the DSL modem. It worked! As long as the traffic on the bridge was low and the voice quality was not great, but at least it was working and reliable. After a month or so with bad voice quailty and no Internet while on the phone, it was wearing thin.
Bought a second router and put that between the modem and the VT1000v, no luck. Then moved PPPoE client to the router and tried again. That works now. It seems that the VT1000 does not like the Speedstream 5100b in either of the three modes. It works with a wireless bridge in between, and it works with a router that runs the PPPoE client in between.
It looks like neither the Voip client in the Speedstream or the VT1000v work for Vonage Voip with this DSL coonection, the PPPoE client in the router (SMC7004FW) does work. I have no idea why it does work with a wireless bridge in between. That bridge (SMC2655 to Linksys WAP11) should be pretty much transparent.
Now that the VT1000v carries all traffic and there is no wireless bridge for the Voip traffic the sound quality is OK again, even when there is Internet traffic. Voice has priority, which is good.
Internet traffic and Vonage Voip over a wireless bridge at the same time (802.11b) is not a good idea.
