Post subject: DCM202, WRT54GL, and WoW - Vonage the problem?
Hi folks,
I've got a D-link DCM 202 cable modem -> WRT54GL (DD-WRT V23SP2 firmware) -> Two wired computers, and one RTP300
Vonage
router/phone adapter. The problem I'm having is when I only have one computer up in the morning, I have no problems with latency. I'm only on for a half our or so, so I guess it could be the amount of time. When I come home and start using both computers I start getting not only lag, but "disconnects". I have caught my modem rebooting recently, but it doesn't happen every time I get lag. I play WoW (World of Warcraft) on both computers (my wife plays on the other computer), and it's gotten so bad we can't play together anymore. We tend to start getting disconnected within just a few minutes. If I'm on WoW and she starts using her computer, then I will start to get lag, and most likely disconnect. I'm not sure if this is due to the
Vonage
router, but just wanted to trouble shoot it.

With the RTP300 plugged into a LAN port on the WRT54G, I think it highly unlikely that it has anything to do with the problem you're describing. However, to be sure, just unplug it for awhile and see how things go. The symptoms seem clear enough to resolve the matter quickly.

Tried unplugging it tonight - and you're right. It didn't help. So it looks like I'll have to move along and try to figure it out - might be my modem. I've tried three different firmwares on my WRT54GL and none seem to fix the issue (that's why I'm thinking it's my modem). Tried Tomato, DD-WRT, and the Linksys.

Post subject: Similar Issues
I'm having similar issues... I have terrible lag and constant disconnects lasting 2 seconds to 5 minutes; however, sometimes things are perfect for days on end, while other times it's terrible... not even the phones work- it doesn't matter the network load or time of day, it can happen with no downloads or multiple users with many downloads, day or night. Plugging/Unplugging somewhat helps, but only slightly... It's terribly frustrating.

Not sure whether it is related. I am an ex-Adelphia customer. About a month ago when Comcast finally took over the network, I started to have issues with my D-Link 202 cable modem. Basically, the modem could not connect during peak hours (e.g., nights and weekends) and occasionally drop the connection for 3-5 minutes during other hours.. Found out that D-Link has a special firmware for Comcast customer. However, the new firmware did not help. I switched back to my old-crappy-fin-like RCA modem and everything is now fine.
Regards.

Sounds like the diagnosis of modem problems is pretty sound. People around here have had good results with the WRT54G running Tomato, so, unless the hardware has gone bad, it's probably not there.
