PostPosted: Tue Feb 20, 2007 12:12 pm    Post subject: Simple List of V-Access Phone Numbers? Reply with quote Back to top

hi all,

While Vonage's V-Access web page provides a pull-down of V-Access numbers for a country, there is no way to print out or send someone the list.

Does anyone know if/where a simple, printable list of V-Access numbers exists? Would be even better if the numbers were listed by city within the country ...

Thanks

I don't know of a simple list. Matching phone numbers to local prefixes is not a solvable problem because of the different phone plans and providers available to the person making the local call and because local carriers are not required to provide geographic or LATA information for prefixes.

You can access the raw data for the pull downs using the following form;

http://vonage.com/ajax/v_access_ajax.php?country=US&state=CA&npa=760

The results are a bit cryptic but a little "replace all" in your favorite editor will clean it up quite nicely.

You can leave off npa to get a list of NPAs for the State and you can just supply state to get a list of States for the Country.

Vonage's way of presenting this information is a bit lame because of the fact that multiple area codes overlap and a number in the same area code may be a toll call while a number in a different area code may be local.

There are pay databases available that could help sort this mess out.

Use http://vonage.com/ajax/v_access_ajax.php?country=<CC>

where <CC> is replaced with:

FR for France
IT for Italy
MX for Mexico
ES for Spain
GB for United Kingdom

Country codes must be in upper case.

Canada and the United States require the multi-step process described previously.

Example: 819 in Quebec:
http://vonage.com/ajax/v_access_ajax.php?country=CA&state=QC&npa=819

Once you get the drop down list of numbers for your area, you can always just click with your mouse at the beginning of the first number, then highlight the whole list by dragging your mouse down to the bottom.

Then type control-c for "copy" and then open up a new document somewhere, like in Word or Notepad (for PC users, for example) and then control-p for "paste", and voila, the whole set of numbers are there for you to print out or send to someone you love.

I just tried that with my country and area code, and it works like a charm.

If you are using Word, you can just use File->Open and type in the url (e.g. http://vonage.com/ajax/v_access_ajax.php?country=CA&state=QC&npa=819)

Word will format the results nicely all by itself.

You can also use Data->Import External Data->New Web Query... in Excel to import the data.

I have a blind friend who would like to access this data using Lynx, but of course the fancy drop down list processing uses javascript and won't work.

Vonage really should think about accessibilty.
