If the phone light is solid red with a phone cord in the port. Take out the cord, restart the device without the cord at all. See if the phone light goes a solid green WITHOUT anyone phone cord attached.

this is correct. the motorola 2142 & 2442 have a known issue since the latest firmware roll out. The phone port gets "hung" and the light turns red. The only way to fix it is to unplug the phone cord then do power cycle. Most of the tech support do not know this or do not remember it & will tell you to only do a power cycle or tell you that you are getting your colors confused & it is a voicemail.
Once you have done power cycle with phone cord unplugged, all should be fine & you can plug phone line back in....

Today my phone port 1 was red. I have been having problems with the
Vonage
adapter and my computer commuicating with each other. I have already posted earlier under SixMan post. Since the port was red I just disconnected
Vonage
for now.
Vonage
has not work since I bought this new computer. If you know why the port was red and what I can do about it I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Just wanted you to know that I got my
Vonage
back. The problem was not my new computer or
Vonage
. The problem was my cable modem. My cable company heard my cry and had someone come over and check my modem and that was the problem. They gave me a new one and now have my phone back and my computer is running fast. Just though you might like to know. Thanks for all of your help.
