PostPosted: Sun Feb 18, 2007 6:19 pm    Post subject: Fios Actiontec M1424wr router - wired / wireless Reply with quote Back to top

Hello all,
I have a question about my new set up.
I have switched to the Verizon FIOS Service, which is 20mbps down/5mbps up speeds...yes it is wonderful...well the question is this:
The Actiontec router has ability to use wired & wireless connection's to it, both at the same time, as far as I know..so if I had a vonage/linksys wireless router and connected the 2 to communicate to each other using the wirelsess connection only, BUT leaving my 2 PC'S wired via cat5 cable to back of the actiontec router..do you think it work work? would it work better? word it work worse? would I still have to do the port forwarding trick that I currently have set up for the vonage/linksys router to work?
it seems to me, although i may be wrong, only being a Novice at routing/port forwarding issue's, that by doing so would work and make things easier...one thing I dont currently have though is a wirelss vonage/linksys router..I have the rtp300 one.
does Vonage let you swap routers if you tell them you went wireless and need a wireless router, or am I responsible to get my own, since i was originally issued this wired rtp300 one?\
one last question, does anyone know how to check within the Vonage account page, how long they have been using Vonage for?.like when i first signed up? i cant find a record of this anywhere on my Vonage account page

thanks all, zippy

I would always recommend using the wired connection for simply the reason of any possible lag time in using a wireless connection. I would suggest that you connect one of your computers to the rtp300 and free up a space if you are limited to 2 ethernet connections on your modem/wireless router. There would be no delay from your ISP but any wireless connection will have some delay versus a wired connection. So my guess would be that most likely it will be worse than a wired one.

One slight problem. How do you plan on connecting your rtp300? It is designed for connecting via ethernet cables only?

My understanding is that Vonage only replaces routers if they are defective and if they are within the warranty period. Otherwise, the burden of cost is upon the customer.

If you log into your account on www.vonage.com and select Account at the top menu, it will show under the account information section Account Date Created and it should have the date your account started on it.

Hello and thanks for the info, as far as How I was going to connect the RTP300, I was meaning that if I had the Vonage Wireless Router, instead of using the current wired Vonage rtp 300.

hi
all Vonage routers are one way devices they can only communicate on the wireless part to the LAN, they require an hard wired ethernet connection to the WAN, so u have to anyway get a cable to run between the actiontech and the Vonage ...........

Anyway u have an option to get a Wi-Fi (utstarcomm) device which is as good as a cell phone inside the house.......... thats the only option you have , as Vonage cannot get a wireless input from the internet all that it can do is to give out wireless signals to the LAn.....

Hello, oh Ok, I realize what you mean..it would only be able to send a wireless connect to my PC's in replacment of the wired LAN Connection, but wouldnt be able to receive a wireless connection from the verizon fioz actiontec router as a WAN Connection..correct?

that's correct. wireless routers do not have the capability to communicate to other wireless routers wirelessly. They normally have to be connected via ethernet cable.
