PostPosted: Fri Feb 16, 2007 8:04 pm    Post subject: DHCP Issues with the VT2142 (Motorola) Reply with quote Back to top

Ok, here is my setup: i've got two computers sharing a broadband connection through a router, and it seems as if whenever the Motorola VT2142 is plugged in, neither the computers nor the PA will connecto the internet. The computers, when set to DHCP will get addresses in the 192.168.15.xxx range and not connect unless I manually set IPs, gateways, and DNS for them, while the phone hooked up to the PA will just say, 'the Vonage device has no internet connectivity'. When I disconnect the PA, everything works just fine, both computers will get correct addresses with DHCP enabled and they can connect to the internet. Any ideas on whats going on? On another note, I can never access the so-called setup page for the VT2142. i've tried 192.168.15.1, but it doesn't work right.

The VT2142 is probably set by default to use the same sub-net range that your main router is using, and that's creating a conflict. Disconnect the VT from the main router. Plug your computer into the VT and boot them up. Log on to the VT admin page and set its sub-net to something other than 192.168.15.xx, for example 192.168.16.xx. Then re-cable and re-boot everything and see if that works.

Issue seems to be simple if the N/W Setup is correct. I understand from Most LINKSYS ROUTERS, the Ip address ranges as 192.168.1.***. The Network Range of MTA is 192.168.15.***, Both are in two different N/W. The Vonage MTA has just 1 Ethernet port.
Try either one of these two setups.

1) Remove all wires from MTA including the Power, Then Conn the Power alone & Push the Reset button on the Rear side for 30 seconds. And disconn the power from MTA.

2) Unplug the Power from Modem , BEFSR41 Also

Conn 1 Cat 5 cable B/W Modem --> Wan port in BEFSR41 & Second Cat 5 Cable from LAN Port 1 of BEFSR41 to the Blue INTERNET PORT in MTA. Leave the Yellow ethernet port free

3) Conn your both PC'S to the 2nd & 3rd LAN ports in BEFSR41

3) Power up the Modem , wait for 1 min, Power Linksys , wait for 1 min & then Power Vonage.

Phone & Internet should be fine.

OR)

U can switch N/w to Modem --> Wan port in MTA & Lan port in MTA to Wan port in BEFSR41 & conn both pcs to LAN ports in BEFSR41. Reboot the Modem, MTA & Linksys . This should also work fine.

Ok, I managed to get it working again, heres what I did. I downloaded the manual for the VT2142 from the Vonage website and compared my installation with the instructions in the guide. I originally had it so that it was just the yellow cable running from the yellow port to the router, and the telephone attached to Phone 1, but now the yellow cord is connected to one of the computers, and the blue cord runs to the router. After that it was just a matter of turning everything off and powering them on in the right order (VT2142, router, and modem all must go on before the computers do), and now everything works as it should. I just can't get to the admin page, although the linksys router reports 3 devices with their IPs, one of them being mine, the other two don't bring up the admin page for the VT2142.

Only a computer plugged into one of the yellow LAN ports on the VT2442 will be able to get to its admin page. Computers plugged into the BEF will not.
