Bought a new Gateway desktop computer
Model: GT5408 Processor: Intel Core2 4300@1.80 Ghz Memory (RAM): 1048 MB Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium
When internet access is routed through my Motorola VT2442 router for Vonage service, my internet download speed drops to 800 kbps.
When internet is running directly into my computer from the cable modem and the Motorola VT2442 router is not connected, internet download speed is back up to almost the normal 6 mbps(Comcast).
My phone is plugged into phone port 1 on the Motorola VT2442 router and the cable from the router to my computer is plugged into ethernet port 1 on the Motorola router.
Even though I only have 1 phone connected to the Motorola VT2442 via phone port 1, the light for phone 2 on the front of the router is lit solid green. The light for phone port 1 flashes red and is never green. I have repeatedly tried to disconnect and reconnect my router according to the instructions with the Motorola VT2442 router. I had no problem with download speed with my old computer and was wondering what the problem might be now that I have a new computer. When my Vonage is up and running I have good quality and no problems placing and receiving calls. I just lose all my internet speed and it is really maddening. I would appreciate any help you might have. Thanks. |

were the speeds ok with your old pc? if yes try disabling any firewalls and anti virus softwares in this pc.reboot the whole network and pc.do you have any routers?if still there is a drop in speed call Vonage to check for device/firmware issues.

It can be one of two things if it is infact the Vonage adapter. First, I have seen some computers that have a problem using the VT2442 as a DNS relay. This is the problem I have seen most often with internet slowdowns. There is a quick solution to this. Go to http://192.168.15.1 and log in with router/router. Go to setup and click on LAN Configuration. Find the box that says "Apply ISP DSN and SNTP" and check it. Reboot your computer and test your connection to see if that works any better.
The second is a possible link speed negotiation issue, which if the DNS change doesn't help I will give you some steps to take a look at.
Also, what test are you using to determine your download/upload speed? |

try to assign the static DNS 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 in your computer that is connected to the Vonage router |

Funny, my Dell works OK.
I suggest you call Vonage tech support. They are really really good and they will surely find the issue in no time. |

Thanks for the tips. No resolution so far though. I've tried to go to the router setup page but my browser will not display the page. I still don't understand why I can't get to my router setup page. I am testing my download speed through Speakeasy. Sure would be nice to fix this without calling overseas for tech support. |

I am having the same problem as SixMan. I also just bought a new Dell Dimension E520 and ever since I install Vonage on the new computer I get some calls and I can talk for a little and then they can't hear me. I can hear them but they can't hear me. Sometimes the call is drop all together. I was told on another forum to disconnect the yellow cable from my computer and then see if I could call out or get calls. Well I could call out but when I received a call I was able talk for a while and then the call was dropped but then I could not get online. So right now I have Vonage disconnected so I could get online and write this.
I hope it was alright to post this here with SixMan. I thought since we are both having the same problem we could both be helped at the same time. Vonage sent me another adapter but it still is not working right. Any help would be appreciated. This computer is only 2 weeks old. Before I had a HP Provillion 4535 and it was 10 years old and Vonage work fine on it. I did have to use an adapter with it to hook up Vonage but it worked.

Hello sixman, when you say you cant get to the router setting's page..do you mean nothing happens at all? or you can at least get to the screen where it prompts you for name and password? to make sure you are entering the correct Number's in the address bar of your browser, do this:
1) right click on the icon for your lan connection and then choose ' STATUS". .. Icon is down by clock and looks like two monitor's ontop of each other
2) when window opens, click on the "SUPPORT" Tab
3) in this window, write down the ip address next to the "DEAFULT GATEWAY" heading.
4) close all those windows and open your internet explorer browser
5) in the address bar type in http://192.168.xxx.xxx (where the X"s are the numbers you should have written down, should be something like this 192.168.15.1
if you do steps as I mentioned above it is the way to make sure you have the default gateway ip address to enter into browser, then all you will need is to enter your name/password and router setting's window should appear.
let me know if this helped or go you in, it is possible somehow your default gateway was changed and you were not entering the correct numbers . |

I have had the 2 green lights before on the adapter and it screws up my download speeds.
I unplugged my router, adapter and modem. I then plugged them back in, in this order: cable modem, router and Vonage adapter. Works fine after that. |

This is what Vonage support sent me via e-mail.
"Thank you for contacting Customer Care.
We understand from your email that your phone port 1 LED in your Vonage device is not green and both the lights are lit, secondly you have query regarding the Internet speeds.
We would request you to check whether there is any Voicemail message on that line. Also if you are using any Home Wiring to connect your phones, then we suggest you to connect the phone directly to the phone port 1 and check whether the issue persists.
We request you to reply to this email with the following information.
1. What (if any) is the make and model of your router(s)?
2. Describe your network? Please include how all the routers are connected and where your Vonage device is connected.
For the troubleshooting purposes we suggest you to run the test mentioned below for two different network set-ups and send results to us via attachments:
1. When your computer is connected to your Vonage device. 2. When your computer is connected to your modem.
1) THE BANDWIDTH TEST:
To test your bandwidth, visit the link given below:
http://www.vonage.com/help.php?article=497
2) TRACE ROUTE (TRACERT):
Trace Route is a utility that records the route through the Internet between your computer and a specified destination computer. It also calculates and displays the amount of time each hop took. Trace route is a handy tool both for understanding where problems are in the Internet network and for getting a detailed sense of the Internet itself. To run a trace route,
a. Click on "START" > "RUN."
b. Type in "CMD" (For older windows versions, type in COMMAND).
c. Type the command between quotas, tracert yahoo.com
Send the screen shot for the bandwidth and tracert as attachments. To create a screenshot:
1. On your keyboard, locate and press the "Print Screen" (orPrtScrn/SysRq) button.
2. Open MS-Word and paste the screen shot.
3. Click on "Save."
