Hi!

I am interested in getting Vonage soon possibly but before I do that I would like to upgrade the existing wiring in my house..

right now, I have the quad wiring... red, green, orange, and black I believe and would like to go with the newer cat5 wiring...

okay, the problem is that I'm not sure what equipment I need for the "upgrade" besides the cat5 wires of course! Do I need a new base station at the starting point of the phone wiring - where the wires come in, which in my case is in the basement?
This would involve the panels where the wires connect to the house from the outside. Is there a different panel set for cat5 wired homes?

Also, do I need different faceplates.... the ones in my house have the quad wiring (of course as that's what I have)... is there different wiring system for cat5?

Thanks!

Do you need? No. Might you want? Sure! Of course it really depends on how old the existing panels are. You might want something more up to date, but I'm sure that the old ones would serve. The "sticky" message at the top of the forum has a lot of good stuff on home wiring, punchdown blocks, and so forth. The long and the short of it is that although the new cable is higher quality, the connections you need to make with it are pretty much the same.

No. The faceplates are the same. The coloring scheme is different, of course. Some people do use the full 4 pair RJ45 jacks instead of the common 2 pair RJ11s. You can plug an RJ11 plug into an RJ45, and you'll also be ready if you ever need four lines. But it really isn't necessary.

I agree with Steve that unless you need 4 lines, you do not need to change your face plates. How many lines are you looking for?

You will most likely not need anything new in terms of a "base station" since the only difference between quad and cat5 is that there are 2 extra pairs of wires but the principle of connecting is still the same. You would still only need 1 pair for each line.

So what I would do is replace one pair with the solid blue/striped blue pair and the next one with another pair, etc.

There is really no need to go get another "base station" or punchdown block unless yours is defective.
