Received an email today from Vonage regarding the V-Access. I thought for a brief moment that they brought back the toll free number, but I have to come to terms that this is gone forever.
They did change the format for Canada and The U.S. You pick which state or province you want, then the area code and then they tell you which cities the numbers will work for. |

"You pick which state or province you want, then the area code and then they tell you which cities the numbers will work for."
Not exactly an improvement, in my opinion. They display both a list of phone numbers (in ascending numerical order), and also a list of cities and towns (in alphabetical order). There is no way from their list alone to determine which number applies to which town. I looked over the list of numbers for my area code, and they are all pretty obscure exchanges and not one of them I recognized for my local area even though my town is on their list now.
Neither lists are clickable, which would have made sense: Click a phone number, get a list of what towns it works in. Or click a town, see the local number or numbers available.
Vonage is still brain dead when it comes to the V-Access thing. I believe their corporate policy on this one must be, "Let's give 'em a feature, but let's make it so hard to use, nobody will bother!"
They did add more numbers, I'll give them that. |

As a followup to my own message, I found a site today where potential users of V-Access in the US, Canada, and certain Carribbean countries can go to look up the locations of the three digit local exchange numbers:
Local Exchange Lookup (not a Vonage site)
and click on a state, then an area code, and finally enter the three digit local exchange, and it will show the location of the exchange.
I can't vouch for its accuracy, but by going through the Vonage list within a given area code, it zeroed in on a local number I could give to my family in Florida that should be free for them to call. Just to be sure, when I gave them the number I asked them to verify it by checking the front of their local phone book to make sure that exchange was listed as being in their local calling area. |

the numbers are in order with the cities.
what I mean is you pick the number say it is 5 on the list move down 5 on the city list. I agree it would have been better to click on the city and the vaccess number comes up. |

I'm not sure if your family will experience what I did but vonage called my work # after I had used the v-access # to call my home phone. I moved so my home phone is a long distance call from work.
Maybe you can warn you family about that possibility if they choose to use v-access. |

This is not true, at least not in my case. I suspect if it is true in some cases it is purely by luck.

I was in Texas and the area code matched the city no problem.
Why did Vonage call your work number with regards to the vaccess? |

What I was trying to say was that I think Vonage is using the phone numbers they collect when people use V-access as their database so that they can telemarket to those people to try to get them to join vonage. |

Can anyone confirm this? Does vonage really use telemarketers?
I've been thinking about switching, if they harass me or my friends, we will all definately cancel within the hour. |

My question to you would be, what company out there doesn't use telemarketers? Even your local telco will bombard you with junk mail pleading to get you back and since I am on the do not call list, they cannot call me at home. But if it wasn't for that do not call list, they would also be bombarding me with telemarketing calls at home.
I'm not sure why this would be a surprise to you. And I am even more unsure why this would be a good reason to cancel. It's a fact of life and if you want to deal with a company that does not market itself either by mail or by phone, you would be hardpressed to find any. This is even more understandable in light of Vonage's age as a company, that is it is still a very young company trying to establish itself. |
