Help. My friends and neighbors (in Sanford NC) are unable to call my Vonage phone number. When they call, they get a recording that "this number cannot be dialed." Their landlines are served by Alltel and Windsteam. One friend called Alltel and was told that "Alltel does not connect to Vonage numbers."

That sounds totally bogus. Is it possible that your number isn't local to them? How are they trying to dial it?

They've tried
1+area code+number
1+number
area code+number
1+number
number only

I've contacted Vonage, too, and am awaiting their response.

If everyone except this one person(or people on Alltel lines in his area) are able to call you, it sounds like it is an issue with call routing on Alltel's end. The reason they gave your friend is completely wrong though, and I am pretty sure that if your friend had that recorded and passed it along to the FCC Alltel would be in a nice heap of trouble for even saying that.

Still waiting on Vonage. I gave them updated information and they said they would get back to me in 24-hours (!).

I called Alltel/Windsteam and was told that their system does not recognize my Vonage phone number -- apparently Vonage created a new exchange -- as valid. They said there's nothing they can do (although any other person who calls my phone number outside of my local geographic area works fine). They said that it is up to Vonage to update the switch.

As I said. I'm ....waiting.... on Vonage.

What a PITA!

Have I made a huge mistake by ditching my landline and going with Vonage?

Where does the blame lie? I find it hard to believe that it is __Vonage's__ responsiblity to update an Alltel/Windstream switch. (Especially when other carriers (BellSouth) can connect to me just fine.

Any phone techs out there know what the problem really is? What recorse do I have? Should I demand a refund/discount from Vonage? Report Alltel/Windstram to the FCC?

It wouldn't be so bad, except NO ONE LOCALLY can call me (my childrens' schools, my auto mechanic, etc.)

This definitely sounds like an issue at Alltel's end. If they are a local landline company regulated by your local public service commission (or whatever it's called in your neck of the woods), I'd call the PSC and raise the roof.

What is your NPA-NXX (don't post the last four digits unless you want to). Look it up at http://www.localcallingguide.com/ under Search Area Code/Prefix/OCN. I'm sure you'll find it there, and that's all that Vonage has to do. AllTell is required to complete calls to any number in that database.

Since you said that "Vonage opened a new exchange", then if that's true, it's possible that this is just the age-old "new code" problem which has nothing to do with Vonage, and AllTell just needs to get it into their switch. You didn't port, right? You just let Vonage assign the number, right?

Try calling some other numbers in that NPA-NXX at random (be polite to anyone you reach) from an AllTel phone.

Let us know the EXACT wording of the ENTIRE recording you get. Tell us EXACTLY what you dialled, and the NPA-NXX at AllTel that you dialled FROM. Also, tell us whether the recording waited until you had dialled all the digits, or if it started while you were still dialling.

I'm not 100% I understand. The NPA is 919. The NXX is 769.
It says that the effective date is 2005-05-01 (so I'm not sure how "new" it really is).

It shows 2 listings:
919-769 Bonlee NC FYVLNC01DS0 4984 TELCOVE OPERATIONS - NC 949
919-769 0 Bonlee NC 4984 TELCOVE OPERATIONS - NC 949 2005-05-01

See http://www.localcallingguide.com/lca_prefix.php?npa=919&nxx=769&x=&ocn=&region=&lata=&switch=&pastdays=0&nextdays=0

I have testing calling from the following exchanges:
919.774
919.776
919.777

All callers report hearing the message:

"This call cannot be completed as dialed. Please check the number then try your call again."

They hear the message after dialing all number. There no ringing. They hear the three ascending tones, then the recording. They have tried using:

1+919+769....
919+769....
769..

My phone number is a new number assigned by Vonage. I was told that they could not port my old landline number. Sad

I called Vonage and they told me that tech support is working on the issue and should be resolved in 24-36 hours. They did give me 1 month credit....

I'm just curious as to who is __really__ to blame?

Since callers from other carriers (919+847, 919+247, etc.) are able to call my Vonage number, does this mean that Alltel/Windstream dropped the ball? Or is it Vonage's responsible to update the the "system"?

Tx for your help,

Your code is not new. The two listings are for number pooling (splitting an NPA-NXX out to different carriers based on the next digit after the NPA-NXX). It's a bit odd to have a "0" listing and a "blank" listing, but since they both go to the same place, that should be no problem. Does your number (the last four) start with a "0"?

So you have a Bonlee number, which is a local call from Bonlee, Bennett, Carthage, Coleridge, Goldston, Highfalls, Pittsboro, Robbins, Sanford, and Siler City.

It's interesting that the places that you've had it work from are both long distance, in Raleigh. It would be interesting to try from some of the other local exchanges, especially those that are not run by AllTel. The other Bonlee exchange is run by CAROLINA TEL. & TEL. CO. (UNITED SYM); it's 919-837. Your exchange is run by a CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) name Telcove Operations with a switch called FYVLNC01DS0 (obviously located in Fayetteville) which handles all of the following:

910-221 Fayetteville
910-222 Fayetteville
910-312 Clarkton
910-447 Rose Hill
910-543 Lake Waccamaw
910-627 Clinton
910-776 Tabor City
910-885 St Pauls
919-504 Goldston
919-533 Pittsboro
919-769 Bonlee

I'd be interested to know if AllTel is simply broken to any or all of those that are local to Sanford (Sanford's calling area is Sanford, Bonlee, Broadway, Carthage, Fayetteville, Goldston, Olivia, Pittsboro, and Vass)

Here are all the exchanges that should be able to reach Bonlee as a local call.

919-769 Bonlee
919-837 Bonlee
336-581 Bennett
336-879 Coleridge
910-464 Highfalls
910-722 Carthage
910-947 Carthage
910-948 Robbins
919-200 Siler City
919-352 Sanford
919-353 Sanford
919-356 Sanford
919-444 Pittsboro
919-478 Sanford
919-504 Goldston
919-533 Pittsboro
919-542 Pittsboro
919-545 Pittsboro
919-548 Pittsboro
919-566 Sanford
919-642 Pittsboro
919-663 Siler City
919-704 Pittsboro
919-708 Sanford
919-718 Sanford
919-721 Sanford
919-726 Pittsboro
919-742 Siler City
919-770 Sanford
919-774 Sanford
919-775 Sanford
919-776 Sanford
919-777 Sanford
919-799 Siler City
919-842 Sanford
919-895 Sanford
919-898 Goldston

You probably don't want to go phone touring to try to call your number from all these places, but you do have an interesting area with lots of different little local telcos. It would be interesting to know whether Carolina Tel and Randolph Tel have trouble calling you as well.

Yes, my number starts with a "0"

Yes, we selected a Bonlee number because it was local from Sanford. Vonage said that they could not give me a Sanford number, but we still needed our house phone to be local for everyone else.

The 919-742 exchange is able to call my Vonage number just fine, too.

Thanks for all the info, but....um....what does it all mean? Who's at fault here? Vonage? Alltel/Windstream? Me?

Tx
