PostPosted: Sat Feb 03, 2007 1:09 pm    Post subject: Choppy incoming audio with Vphone and USB modem Reply with quote Back to top

Hi,

Just took our Vonage box and vphone down to Argentina and I desperately need to hook it up for work!!

The problem is that the ISP here has provided me with a DSL/USB modem which works fine for getting the computer here online. Unfortunately it does not allow me to hook up my Vonage phone (which works with ethernet only).

As an alternative I have a V-phone USB stick which I plugged into the other USB slot on the computer. I´ve made multiple calls all of which have reported back that the outgoing audio is spectacular (ie:they hear me crystal clear), but the incoming is rubbish (I can´t hear them at all)! It is consistently choppy as if the incoming data is bottlenecking somewhere.

I have disabled the firewall and virus software on the computer. This has not helped.

Does anybody have any ideas? Here is the data I pulled off of testmyvoip.com which I do not understand at all.

Any ideas at all would be SO appreciated. Thank you very much

Greig

Those results look fine, but testmyvoip.com generally reports two sets of results- one for incoming and one for outgoing. We'd need to see both, especially since your problem is on incoming only. You should also run the forum Voip test and report those detailed results.

Hmm..

Thank you very much for writing back.

I was unaware of the forum speed test.

Download 444,472 bps
Upload 112,448 bps
QOS 31%
RTT 185 ms
MaxPause 370 ms

What was flagged on the summary was my QOS, which quite rightly indicated that my signal would likely be choppy.

That is reassuring in that my problem is detectable. My concern is whether it is fixable.

Am I right to assume that my next step is to go to my ISP? If so, what specifically should I be telling them? Remember incoming audio is trash, and outgoing is perfect.

Thank you again!

OH... And here is the incoming-outgoing results of testmyvoip.com

Those testmyvoip results are strange. If you hadn't told us differently, I would interpret them to indicate terrible outgoing and fine incoming, based on outgoing packet discards.

The results from your forum test are incomplete. You need to go to the advanced tab and post everything there.

The one thing that stands out so far is the max pause time reported by the forum test and the media delays reported by the testmyvoip test. From what we're seeing so far, it looks like an ISP issue with latency being the problem. Things are just taking too long to support good phone service.

Wow...

I can assure you that the problem is certainly with incoming audio. Very strange indeed.

What (if anything) can be done to help with latency issues?

The strangest thing is that out of desperation I have signed up with Skype and it works fine on this connection. Is that normal that Skype can work where Vonage can fail? I would much rather use my Vonage package which I have paid for instead of Skype which cots with each call.

Since the connection can support Skype and not Vonage should I make the assumption that the problem is not the connection but perhaps the computer that I am using the USB with? Or should I be investigating problems with the ISP?

I really do appreciate the help given thus far. Thank you.

Here´s the complete (I hope!) results from the forum speed test.

Despite the low QoS and somewhat high times, these numbers aren't all that bad. If Skype is working fine with the service, I'd get with Vonage tech support at this point and see what they have to say.
