1. Commonwealth of Dominica
2. Cable and Wireless --> Cable Modem
3. 512 kbps synchronous
4. Unknown
5. VTA-VR
6. Modem---->Router---->Vonage Adapter (PC on wireless)
7. No dial tone
8. I was fiddling with the test and went over the number of tests allowed accidentally without saving the prior information. Each test indicated that I could sustain 4 Vonage connections, the QOS was around 45%, up was ~450kbps and down was ~400kbps. I'll try again tomorrow to run the speed test and update the results.

I stay down in the caribbean for a few months at a time, and this time I brought my Vonage box with me. It's worked just fine for nearly a month and then two days ago the connection started acting up and dropped a call or two. Since then, I have not had a dial tone. Right this second, the lights are all on and solid (Power, Internet, and Phone 1). However, at times the Internet and Phone 1 lights will blink rapidly until I disconnect power (the power light stays solid during the blinking of the other two lights). When the internet activity light and the phone 1 light are blinking rapidly, there is no corresponding activity light on my router. When I pick up the phone, I hear nothing...just open air. People that attempt to call me, immediately get my voicemail and the lights on the VTA do not react.

I have checked and rechecked all the connections and reset and replugged everything numerous times, but I still get nothing.

I'd love to call Vonage support and see what the story is, but I've got no ability to do so from my home here as Vonage is my only phone line. I do have a local cellular telephone, but calling the US is expensive.

Follow-up:

I dispatched an email to Vonage and overnight they switched the line to line 2. When I woke up this morning, the internet, line 1 and line 2 lights were all flashing at different rates. I reset all my gear and the lights were steady on Power, Internet, Phone 2. Phone 1 is now off. There is still no dial tone. I walked down to the store and purchased a plain analog telephone to make sure my phone is not the culprit. The new phone doesn't do anything, no dialing noise, no dial tone, no nada.

I have some friends that have a working Vonage line in the next village over, so I took all my gear to their house. Set it all up on their internet connection and it acts the same way. Lights all look good, plug in phone, no dial tone. Reconnect their gear and it works fine.

I sent a new email off to Vonage asking about replacement, because I believe the Vonage adapter to be the culprit...but I don't know if they'll ship a new adapter down to me here or what.

Any other ideas would be nice.

What you've done for troubleshooting is excellent- especially trying it with the friend's service. That pretty much eliminates everything except the VTA. I would try doing a hard reset on the VTA.

I am concerned with your test results. I've never seen reports of "off' for jitter, and your average round trip time is horrendous. If it weren't for your test at the friends' house, I would have diagnosed issues with you ISP or with your router.

By the way, when you say you took all your gear to the friends' place, I hope you didn't test by substituting all of yours for all of theirs. If you did, you may have brought the problem with you. Try plugging the VTA directly into the port that makes their Vonage box work. In your own setup, try plugging the VTA directly into your modem.

Thanks for the reply.

The speed test I posted is from a different but similar speed testing site. I ran over the limit of tries on the one on this site while I was playing around, and I'm temporarily unable to test it here. Once I am able to again, i will do so.

I only took the VTA and my phones (corded and cordless) to my friends house. I did not take my router. I plugged their internet directly into my VTA and it acted the same way it does at my house. Replace my VTA with theirs, and theirs works fine on both of my telephones. Also, I have tried the VTA both in front of and behind my router at home with no results on either setup. I'm not sure what else I can do to isolate the VTA as the problem, but that's what it feels like to me. I'm still in contact with Vonage via email tech support...it felt like we were getting somewhere but just regressed when they sent me an email telling me to make sure my phone line was connected to the Phone 2 port. Alas, the world is not perfect. I'm working with them to try and get a replacement, but if I can't I'll order a new adapter and have it shipped down here.

I think you've done all you can do, unless you haven't tried the hard reset yet. After that, I'd say that you need the replacement unit.

When you say hard reset, are you talking about the button you depress on the back of the unit? If so, yes I've done that. If not, please let me know how to do so.

I was able to run the speed test on this site, here are the results:

This evening, to put the icing on the cake, I brought my friends Vonage adapter to my house and inserted it into my setup in place of my VTA. It worked perfectly, just like mine was doing up until three or four days ago. I'm convinced it's a bad VTA that I've got. Now to convince vonage......

What you've told us should do it. I'm glad you did all that troubleshooting, because with 3.8% packet losses on the downlink, I'd have called it a clear ISP issue. Good luck with the Vonage support people. Keep in mind that if the VTA is out of warrantee, you can just get a replacement at retail (or have a friend do it and send it to you), and register it with Vonage on line.

Yeah, I haven't had the best of luck with email Vonage support...but I think that's fairly universal and not indicative of just Vonage.

The internet here certainly isn't wonderful, but before my box stopped working the voice connection was just fine. I think the whole island is supplied by a microwave link to one of the neighboring islands...but I'm not certain. I did read in the paper that a new fiber optic cable from San Juan, Puerto Rico all along the islands south to Martinique was just brought ashore a month ago. Once that's integrated into the system here, our speeds and quality should improve. I'm not holding my breath though, if you're familiar with the caribbean at all then you know the pace of things down here (think sloooooow).

In any case, I appreciate the guidance. I did order a new adapter to be shipped to my parents house. They're going to forward it down to me once they get it. With the interpostal delays and customs and all that mess, I imagine I'll be back up in two weeks time. It's a good thing that I just use the line to talk to family back home or I'd be in a pickle.

Thanks!

You might want to have your parents test the unit before sending it to you. Have them Email you the MAC. Activate it on line and they'll be able to test it before shipping.
