any more updates on this plan?

What further info were you looking for? I think everything about it has been covered in this thread already. It is $239.99 for a year of the unlimited plan, this does not include taxes and fees which are applied at the same rate as the monthly plan. The charge is applied at the time that you switch to this plan. No refunds if you decide to cancel during that year and are out of your initial signup 30 day money back period. Everything else is exactly the same as the monthly unlimited plan.

steve -

those two fees are the 911 fee and the regulatory recovery fee. i saw them on my online invoice.

the RRF is a .99 fee per physical line (virtual numbers don't count, woohoo!) that is mandated by govt
the 911 fee is a fee collected by Vonage to set up your 911 service. i'd gladly pay 99 cents a month to make sure my 911 works if i ever needed it!
i personally live in NJ so i have state tax and state 911 tax as well, that adds up to two or three extra dollars a month.

you're right - Vonage is designed to be low cost. but, they have to remain competitive. nobody's going to fly Vonage skies if there's no features like caller id, call forwarding, voicemail, etc - some WILL, sure, I don't like using voicemail, i'd rather push the button on my answering machine - but i'm sure you get my point.

i'm sure if they HAD to, they could operate for less, but that would mean no features. think of it as a flight from new york to paris. want to use the bathroom? think of that like voicemail. that'll be 5 dollars a month, please. want a bag of peanuts or crackers (aka caller ID)? another 5.

to implement all these features i'm sure Vonage gets a much better rate to blanket the entire network with the features rather than having to pick and choose based on account where they go.

the bottom line?

Vonage is about 30 a month. verizon was about 90. verizon now has some new plan that's about 45 to compete with Voip providers.

comcast in my area is about 45 too after that 12 month sample - but i don't WANT digital cable, so i'd be paying more in the end.

if i ever DID leave Vonage i'd probably go to a low-rate verizon dsl plan with their package for 3 down, 768k up. Comcast has us locked at 350k up and I don't really download all the time so I won't notice the difference between 3MBPS and 4.5MBPS.

But, I'm not going to think about moving from Vonage - i've had perfect service for over six months

Vonage had all of the features that it has now before it added those fees. In any case, part of my problem with it is that they choose to try and hide these charges by calling them fees, rather than including them in the advertised rate.

It isn't a mandated fee at all. From the Vonage website:

"A regulatory recovery surcharge of $0.99 applies to each phone number. Vonage uses this fee to pay our regulatory-related fees and expenses, including taxes, number portability charges, and related legal fees."

er, whoops, I meant the federal excise tax fee. That's I think about 3% of the bill.

Nope - that one should have gone away a few months ago. This was the Spanish-American war tax that the government "forgot" to repeal for 108 years.

The two non-local fees are sales tax and the universal service fund contribution.

I just called to try and change to this plan. At first I was told sure, then I was told this is for new activations only and I would have to call back later in the day and ask for the RETENTION DEPT. I also asked about the current promotion of 2 free months for each referral and was told I would get those free months at the end of the year. So this of course opens up a new question - at the end of the year does it default back to monthly or renews for another pre-paid year? Guess thats a question for the retention dept when I call them

Unless you change your plan it will automatically renew for another pre-paid year.
