PostPosted: Fri Feb 02, 2007 3:30 pm    Post subject: Belkin Pre-N router (F5D8230) with Vonage Reply with quote Back to top

Folks,

I am switching from Bell South to Vonage soon and I am wondering if anyone has any good or bad Voip experiences with this router.

Any special configuration on the router I need to do to make the Voip service solid? I have an old Linksys PAP2 (I think) phone adapter.

Thanks

if you run a search you will find this type of router mentioned on a number of posts. The only issue people have mentioned was with it firewall inhibiting the quality and hence they had to disable it in order to get a good quality phone conversation.

hope this helps.

I had this router (recently replaced by Belkin for an N1). It's true the firewall does detect the Voip traffic as a DoS attack and blocks it. However, it might be worth it to take a look at whether you can disable the firewall and stop this problem since in my case the router kept blocking that traffic even after the firewall was disabled. In my case it was because the router was a UK version (check the back panel). If the version is not for your specific region, you can call Belkin and they might just replace it for you like they did mine. I have no complaints with the N1 router though.

thats very unfortunate because I really don't want to turn off the firewall. I guess I will try it out and see if it causes problems in my case. If not, I may have to return it. I really like the range of this router.

I don't have a pre-N router so I cannot speak from experience. However, the disabling of the firewall is a quick and dirty way to get quality Voip service. I would not be surprised if there are more "advanced" ways to do this without disabling your firewall.

Please do not take my posts as saying there is only one possible solution. It just happens to be the simplest one out there but very unlikely the only one.

On a different note, the firewall can also be enabled directly on your computer such as zone alarm etc. So a hardware firewall is not the only possible means of protection.

hope this helps.

do check if it's the US version or not.

btw, I did try things like port forwarding (for Vonage ports) and also placing the Vonage router in the DMZ. absolutely nothing worked for me. Belkin's support was good though, changed without a hassle. Hopefully yours is a good one.

It turns out my phone adapter is RTP300 which can route. So I changed my setup to the following.

Cable Modem ---> RTP300 ---> Phone & Belkin Router ----> computers and other wireless devices

Vonage works fine with this setup.

Thanks everyone for various suggestions!

I am replying to my own post. Does anyone see any issues with the following setup? Everything works fine so far but Vonage's instructions seem to recommend placing the phone adapter behind a router. Why would they suggest that? Wouldn't it better to put the phone adapter in front of the router (as seen below)?

Cable Modem --> RTP300 --> Belkin Pre-N Router --> everything else

Phone

Any comments? Thanks

your device is the pap2v2 which has no lan port and logically speaking it has no routing capability so you need an existing router just incase you want to use your computer and connect it to the internet. this will be your set up for pap2v2

modem>router (netgear n1 right?)>pap2v2

there should be an available lan port on your router for your computer. just connect an rj45 ethernet cable on your router's ethernet port 2 or any port that is available. that should do the trick. your will be able to connect your computer to the internet.

just incase you will not be able to have a dial tone but your have an internet connection please configure your router's DMZ or portforwarding to allow your pap2v2 to connect to your router.

on the other hand if you dont have internet connection but you have a dial tone. verify the ip address of your computer. check if it is 192.168.1.1. if you get that ip. try a ping test try to ping www.yahoo.com. if you cant find the host name. try to ping 64.233.161.147. if there is a reply(you shoud have 4). configure the DNS server and alternate DNS server on you TCP/ip properties. DNS server should be 4.2.2.2 and alternate DNS server is 4.2.2.3 this should do the trick... have a nice day. hope this work!!!

Hi 7thdevil

Please see my previous post. I actually have RTP300. I thought I had PAP2 but I checked when I went home on Friday.
