hello guys

i had Vonage long time , and i just setup a server at home , now i get the login page when ever i try to connect to my server at home, here is how the hardware is setup

cable modem to Vonage motorola
server LAN to Vonage motorola

if i take Vonage motorola off i get to connect to my server service port 80

but when i connect Vonage it does as a firewall and have to login first to get access to the network at home

is there a way to keep Vonage motorola in the same installation above

thank you for your help

seems none of Vonage tech are here to handle this question , i did read your posting about the dhcp ... i think it will be just simple to buy a hub connect your server and the Motorola to the hub and then connect the hub to the modem cable , i was asking the question thinking if there is any possibility to access to change the firewall option or disable but i think there is no way around it except the hub

what you think ?

I ended up setting up my own DNS and DHCP servers. The DHCP hands out the DNS server info. My DNS server is set to give out my private IP addresses for my hosted web sites. All other requests it forwards to the VT2442 to be resolved.

Seems to work.

I tried to read the "detailed post" by jwenger, and some of the other posts on the forum, but this is all new to me and I don't understand any of it. It would be great if someone could explain this to me in plain English. I don't know the computer lingo.

I have a main home computer and a wireless connection for my work laptop. I had set up a home network so I could print from the laptop and also access files on the main computer. It was all working swimmingly until I hooked up the new Vonage phone setup, carefully following the directions. I can still get into the internet w/ the wireless, but I can't connect to shared files on the main computer, and I can't print, which is a big problem! If I go to control panel in my main computer, it shows the LAN is connected. Control panel on the laptop shows that the LAN is disconnected and says "a cable is unplugged." I'm thinking it must be an obvious problem, but Vonage and Verizon technicians could not help me. I've been through the Vonage usersguide and support sites, and have changed some settings, looked at the firewall... I'm afraid to make too many changes, and most things appear as they are "supposed" to according to the guide.

Here's the setup:
AT&T phone (2.4 gHz) connected to the DSL modem (Westell Versalink 327W with Verizon service), connected to the Motorola VT2142 supplied by Vonage, connected to my PC (Dell, running XP).

Can anyone help? I've spent hours and hours over the past couple of weeks, and really need to resolve this! I'm losing a lot of work time.

THANKS[/size]

My situation does not apply to you. I am hosting my own websites behind my Vonage device. Your setup is much simplier.

Your description is somewhat lacking but your problems are that you have (2) routers with firewalls on your network.

Your Vonage device and your wireless router both have built in firewalls that are meant to protect your computers from others on the Internet. One of these firewalls is between your wireless and wired computers.

The easy fix is to plug your desktop computer into the wired port of your wireless router instead of into your Vonage device. This will put them on the same IP subnet and allow them to talk freely to each other.

If for some reason this is not possible, you need to either enable NetBIOS on your wireless router's firewall or put it into bridge mode which disables the firewall completely. Check the documentation or website from the manufacturer for details on this.

The control panel networking applet on your laptop says a cable is unplugged because you are not using the wired port on your laptop. Check your wireless utility on the taskbar for connectivity to your wireless network.

Good Luck with your setup. Once you get it working, be sure to encrpyt your wireless router and laptop using WPA or WEP if WPA is not available. Otherwise, you will be sharing your Internet connection and computer files with your neighbors!

Adam,

Yes, I already had an ethernet switch behind the VT2442. I just disabled DHCP on the VT2442, setup DHCP and DNS on my Windows 2003 server. I used DHCP options to hand out the Windows 2003 server IP as the DNS server. Then I loaded the DNS server with the local IPs of my hosted websites and had it forward all other DNS requests to the VT2442 which then forwards to my ISPs DNS servers.

Everything works well now.

John -- thanks for the help. I will give it a try. Are you suggesting I change the order that the devices are connected? Excuse my ignorance, but does that mean switching the cables? Use the blue one between the modem (which is also the wireless router) and the pc, and the yellow one between the modem and the Vonage device?

My wireless is already encrypted, but thanks for the reminder. I'll check and make sure it is still protected once I rearrange the equipment.

I also forgot to mention that I access the internet through a VPN. Does that make a difference? So I guess that's a third firewall? In the control panel, the WAN Miniport (PPTP) says connected, firewalled; the wireless connection says connected, firewalledl the LAN says network cable unplugged, firewalled.
