I read somewhere that I should try plugging the ATA directly into the Cable modem, so I tried that. Made no difference.

Well, I've just got off the phone with Vonage themselves; speaking to a guy in New Jersey, apparently!

Although we went through every possible test, he couldn't find anything wrong. He did suggest changing the ATA to see if that helped, but is it likely to? It's hardly likely to be faulty from Day 1 is it?

So, coming up to the end of my first month a decision has to be made. Keep it or dump it?

On the plus side it is saving me 50% on a standard "line + call costs". On the negatives of course is thig 'kind-of half-duplex' problem.

Being unemployed I do like the idea of saving money though Wink

(BTW, sorry for the rant. Just venting out loud Very Happy)

Try running a test to http://cemp1.switch.ch/network/performance/web100/tcpbw100.html

After the test finishes, click on "statistics".

You will now see:

------ Web100 Detailed Analysis ------
Cable modem/DSL/T1 link found.
Link set to Full Duplex mode <----------
No network congestion discovered.
Good network cable(s) found
Normal duplex operation found. <--------

Are you getting full duplex? If so, the problem is with the ATA.

Wow! Who'd thought the ATA would be faulty:

Wil get onto Vonage ASAP. Thanks!

I was going to attach the full results but it looks like I can't. The reason for that is that I also got this "information" alert:

Quote:
[S2C]: Excessive packet queuing detected

Is that anything to worry about in general or specifically for Voip?

Are you running the test on a computer with a wireless connection? Sometime packets can queue up in the wireless network card. It does it with mine at least. If not, I really wouldn't worry too much about about it.

Yeah, it is wireless, but the main system is hard-wired; ie with an Ethernet cable. Yeah, I'm not going to worry about it.

Just got to get a new ATA now and see if they'll extend my 'money-back guarantee' for another month while I try the new ATA Razz

Thanks to all for their help.

As it happens, I have just yesterday upgraded the firmware in my router. However, it has had no effect (good or bad) on the problem.

Now the fun really starts. I arranged for a new ATA to be despatched, thinking that I could use my existing one until it arrived in around three days. However, Vonage had other ideas and, five minutes later, I could no-longer make any calls as someone had changed my registered device to the new ATA.

So I emailed Customer Services and am still waiting for someone to switch it back. Why do I have a feeling it's not gonna happen Sad
