Hello,
Mac Book Pro ...just got mine and just got Vonage...by now maybe someone out there has the answer. The Mac Book Pro has the ability to share ethernet (an IP address) with another device. So it would seem logical that I should be able to jump on a wireless network, plug my Vonage modem into the eithernet port and plug my phone in and make a call. When I purchased the service I described that process to Vonage and they said sure...should have known it was a salesman...not a tech guy. Now the big problem is I can't even get a Mac tech guy at Vonage...even after an hour of PC people passing me around and not being able to help. I had an assurance from a supervisor that he knew how that could be accomplished on a PC and what I was asking made sense, but he was not a Mac guy. A Mac tech was scheduled to call me the next day and never did...so I am trying this Forum route.
Can you shed any light on the problem?

The following suggestion did not work:
Internet sharing is taken care of through the System Preferences application, in the "Sharing" section. Once you have clicked on "Sharing", the window will update to show the setttings, with three tabs. Select the "Internet" tab. If the controls on this tab are grayed out, you'll need to click on the lock at the bottom of the screen and give it an administrator user name and password.
Now to set up the sharing itself. Assuming you want to connect from your laptop to the internet through wireless, choose to "Share your internet connection from:" "AirPort". Then, in the section "To computers using:" select "Ethernet". Press "Start".
That's it for sharing your connection -- from here your wireless router should be able to get an IP address and start talking to the world. There is, however, one further issue you need to take care of, and that's your Mac's built-in firewall. Your router connecting in through the ethernet port is subject to these rules, so you have two options:
0) Turn off the firewall altogether. Select the "Firewall" tab and press "Stop", or
1) Add rules ot the firewall to let through the connections that Vonage needs to work. This is the best option, as it leaves your computer protected from unauthorized access. Switch to the "Firewall" tab and press "New". Under "Port Name" select "Other". Enter in for "UDP Port Numbers" the following text:
5060-5070, 10000-20000
In the description field, write "SIP". Press okay.
Lastly, press the "Advanced" button, and make sure that "Block UDP traffic" is disabled. Press Ok. |

The most common problem I run into here is the use of the wrong cable. A different Ethernet cable, a crossover cable, is typically required when connecting a device to a PC Ethernet port rather than a router Ethernet port.
Other than that you need to diagnose the problem in the same manner as any network troubleshooting issues. Diagnostic lights on your adapter should indicate whether the router has acquired an IP address and whether it can connect with Vonage. |

I will discuss this with my IT guy. Today for some reason my airport stopped working. It shows that it is on by the Icon on the top right...but says I have no wireless connection....My IT guy checked it all...I'm a graphic designer and only marginally capable of understanding all of this. The Vonage thing works great here in the office and it seemed like a simple way for me to take my office and live/work in Europe.It's either the system or the laptop hardware...the thing is only a month old and I used the airport on a trip over Christmas...been hooked up with a cable to my router in my office here. it's always soemthing...I have a G-4 as a bakup...so I will have to take this to Apple now I guess before I can solve this wireless connection Issue.
