I recently signed up with Vonage and installed the Motorola VT2142 router they sent me exactly according to the start up instructions using my existing Motorola cable modem. The Vonage phone service works, at least I get a dial tone and was able to call and receive calls. However, I have had nothing but trouble accessing the internet ever since. I cannot access certain web pages at all and can get some pages if I try over and over. I have followed the trouble shooting advise in the start up booklet to reset the modem and router with only limited improvement. I have had to completely disconnect the Vonage router in order to use the internet. When I restore my computer and modem to its original setup without the router I have no problems accessing the internet. This leads me to believe that the router is defective, or there is some trick that is not in the start up books instructions. Anyone else with this problem or a solution?

Harriett, you may have a DNS issue. Check out this link:

Thanks for all the help. I can see that Vonage failed to tell me that I would have to be a computer whiz. I have no idea what any of you are talking about and I shouldn't have to in order to hook up this one device. I have a very simple system - one computer (Dell with a current version of windows XP), one motorola SB5120 cable modem, and now a Vonage Motorola VT2142 device. No where in the Vonage literature or when I signed up did it say anything about knowing how to "ping" something, what my DNS was or is. I am very discouraged and can see that I will have to hire some expert and take time off from work to solve this problem. I guess I thought this Voip technology was more user friendly - I am feeling seriously misled!

I know that it can be frustrating, but try the link that I gave you. Nate Hoy's instructions are very simple. All you have to do is log on to the router at http://192.168.15.1 and disable DNS to see if that's the problem. You don't have to know what DNS is to do that (but all it really is is a service that translates verbal internet addresses like Vonage-forum into numbers). The default user name and password are both router for the VT2142 device.

Edit: My apologies. I've looked at the DNS setup for the VT and it really isn't similar to the Linksys devices for which Nate gives instructions. I can't give you advice on this.

Update: I finally got through to a Vonage technician (Noel at tier 2) who listened to me and had a good command of the English language. He guided me through a process that took over an hour, but basically had something to do with the ISP address for my computer and the router. The lesson learned is to keep calling until you get someone who can help. Emailing the Vonage technical support did not work, however someone from Vonage also called me (on the wrong number, so I missed the call) but I finally got the impression that they wanted to help me. I appreciate the suggestions on this forum, in that it made me realize that something could be done if I persisted.

Another lesson: If you do want to make contact with them by Email, use the contact page here in the forum. We're told that gets special attention.

Belive it or not I have had the same problem with the Vonage routers. I am on my second router now. My first was a Linksys router and certain webpages would load but some if they were ecommerce sights it wouldn't load the next page. I plug my cable modem directly into my machine it was fine.

Vonage sent me a new motorola router and it worked for a while then 2 weeks ago and still now the problem is back. I am trying to figure out what happened here.

Note: CCNA and A++ Tech here. No dummy it seems like the firmware they push screws the router up everyonce in a while...
