PostPosted: Fri Jan 26, 2007 11:55 pm    Post subject: Get dialtone but no outbound calls connect - inbound OK Reply with quote Back to top

New post - using service for 7 weeks, 5 of which we have not been able to make an outbound call. We get a dialtone, but when we dial we get nothing - no busy signal, no beeping, just silence. On the website it doesn't show a call has been made. Through all this our internet connection has been fine. My wife has a home office and i would have heard about it if it was down.

Spoke with their support two weeks ago while following their instructions on putting a static IP on the PAP2 and putting that IP in the DMZ on my router. Worked for two days. Called back again and was put on hold for five minutes. Tech came back and said he 'did something on their end' and to try it. It worked for several calls with him on the phone, then two days later we're back to nothing.

our stats:
Chicago Suburbs
Comcast cable internet - excellent service/uptime from them

Motorola cable modem -> Linksys WRV54g -> Linksys PAP2 -> uniden cordless 5.8Gh cordless phones

results of Voip test seemed good:
Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 6090192 bps
Upload speed: 344856 bps
Quality of service: 98 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 30 ms
Average download pause: 4 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 49 ms
Average round trip time to server: 71 ms

Voip test statistics

Jitter: you --> server: 4.1 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.4 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 5
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

i have decided to call Vonage again tomorrow but after that I believe I have grounds to cancel with no penalty.

Thanks all

Your test results look fine. I would suggest that you do one thing before calling. Temporarily remove the WRV54G and plug the PAP2 directly into your modem. See if that allows you to dial out. If it does, put the WRV back in, check its setup carefully, and disable any firewall that it's running.

That's next - i jut really don't want to do that as our permanent pc is a old PIII 700 that i had to completely reload after trying to run Norton Firewall on it. Disabling our firewall would leave us totally vulnerable.

After an hour on the phone with level II support, they ran the speed test and I got another ' we did something on our end' then we could magically make calls again. We'll see how long that lasts.

Do you all periodically reboot your equipment? Like once a week or so? We've been using the same hardware and setup for a year and it never required any type of reboot or reset up until we started our Vonage adventure.

When Steve was talking about disabling the firewall he meant in your wrv56g not in your pIII. Regardless, I do not reboot anything unless I change a config either on my router or my wireless AP. I usually have to reboot after a power outage or an internet outage etc.

I don't reboot unless something goes wrong. That doesn't happen very often.

My mistake - i meant our old pc is so crummy that it won't run Norton Firewall and the firewall on the router is the only one we have.

On a good note - the phone has worked for amost two days now!
