True, but the "may not" is far more probable than the "may". We've had a lot of threads about this, and I've yet to hear anyone claim good service. The best I've heard is that it works in a pinch where nothing else is available.

When I had DirecTV my R10 and SAT-T60 called in all of the time. Now I have Dish and the 622 and 625 call in no problems. So I guess it is hit or miss Rolling Eyes

I believe the question posed is whether or not Vonage voice calls over HughesNet or the other provider(s) can be done - not whether or not the DirecTV or DIshNetwork receiver can call home.

I doubt that Vonage (or any other Voip provider) will work well over a satellite Internet connection. There is too much latency on satellite Internet connections -- you send something, and it's a half second or more before it's received on the other end, as opposed to milliseconds with terrestrial connections (cable, DSL). The signal has to travel a long distance.

I do know that most Internet games don't work well over satellite Internet connections, and Voip is pretty similar in needing low-latency connections.

Yes it does work and can work well. It is all dependent on the satellite provider and how much you want to pay monthly. We currently have Vonage at about 25 of our remote sites and it works rather well. Calling satellite to satellite can be messy, but that works as well. You have to make sure that the satellite provider has strong QoS support for Voip. Also make sure that they can setup CIR for Voip. You would then need to lower the bandwidth save to the minimum, 30K.

I am not sure how much you are looking to spend. My recommendation for good equipment is iDirect. They built their network around newer technologies, like Voip. They prioritize Voip traffic in the modem and at the Hub. The only thing is, the cost shows that. If you would like me to go into further detail, I can.

I beleive that you would need a provider that beams laser beams from space to your receiving antenna for that to work correctly. Dont think it would work well with traditional satellite Razz

I don't believe iDirect provides consumer grade service, as they are geared for enterprise users. Quoting from their own website, "Optimized to support VSAT network traffic, iDirect network accelerators enable the deployment of government or corporate approved VPN solutions over satellite networks without loss of either TCP performance or support for real-time applications such as Voip and streaming video."

I never said it would be cheap, but it does work and work well. I know many residential customers that use iDirect for their home connection. They get frustrated with the ones touted as residential service. I was recommending equipment and service that I know that works. To a lesser extent ViaSat will work, but they lack the QoS policies of iDirect. They are a bit cheaper, but are more geared towards corporate environments as well.
