What are the risk of using house wiring with the ATA using DSL.I'm thinking of a basic phone line that I will not give the number out. Is this risky if I use the house wiring with the ATA? |

if your house has cat5 wiring for the telephone, you should be fine since there are 4 pairs of wires and so you could use line 1 for your Vonage, line 2 for your dsl and line 3 for your regular land line.
If you have only cat3 wiring which has only 2 pairs, then you are in a tight spot. You would have to disconnect either the land line or the Vonage line. I would really not recommend sharing that line with both the Vonage and the landline. The reason is simple, the landline's number will become public information via the phone book hence open to solicitors of all kinds including non profits who legally can call you even if you are on the do not call list. |

That's kinda what I thought. I only have cat3 and really didn't want to buy a new cordless phone system with multiple handsets to plug directly into the ata.OH well I guess I'll have to stick with cable and continue to threathen I'm gonna switch to get a little discount. |

I'm not sure that I understand. If you're looking to have DSL, plus a landline that's separate from the DSL, plus Vonage, then only having two available pairs is an issue. But if the basic phone service you were talking about is part of the DSL service, then you only need one pair for that and one for the Vonage line. That should work fine. The only risk is that you wire it correctly. |
