Yeah, unfortunately you have to get a fax line for that port. The 2nd phone port is not a splitter of the first one; they are separately provisioned. I think a fax line is actually pretty cheap, and comes with a dedicated number. If you fax enough, it's probably worth it. Secondly, check out the Fax Section here for reports on your specific model of fax machine, to see if any problems have been seen with it. Some fax machines and Vonage do not play well together.
On the other hand, there are reports of people using their primary line to fax, however, it's hit and miss. Since that line is optimized for voice, not many have had success. I'm not sure of how or the details, but the fax line Vonage could provide you is a stripped down data line that is optimised for the the task.
All true. On the other hand, some fax machines work fine sharing the voice line. My HP Officejet 720 does. It's easy to check. Just get a splitter and try yours. Of course, sharing a line usually means that you have to to answer fax's manually.

Be sure to turn down your fax up speed. It seems to help....you'll still occasionally get a lost fax though.
