I am a new subscriber & in the process of waiting for my ATT # to be transferred. I live in Spring, TX, & am transferring a non-metro # that required some callers in Houston to dial "1" first & pay for local LD. These callers still need to dial a "1" to call my virtual assigned #. I assumed that the new V service would eliminate the LD toll call. If I would have had a metro ATT # being transferred would the V # be different ? This is not a big deal, but I can not get a clear answer from V service on how this will be after # transfer. Has anyone had this local problem ? Thanks Sid |

My guess here would be no although I do not live in Texas nor have any idea what a non-metro # is. With that said the theory is that any ported/transferred number will behave (incoming-wise) under Vonage exactly as it did under POTS and with a virtual number anything is possible because its usually not in your local area.
Anyone that had to dial 1 and pay LD will probably still do so. Its the local POTS that is routing the call to your Vonage ported number.
I hope I helped. |

I am also in Houston, and this is how it would work:
Any call to your number that required LD before Vonage will still require LD.
To avoid LD, the caller could call any of the VAccess numbers that was local to him and then call your Spring number at no charge.
If you had a metro number, then most of the Houston area callers would not need to use VAccess because it would not be a long distance call. If they wanted to use VAccess they could, and they could call any VAccess number to call your number. If I had a non-metro number and switched to Vonage, I would either change it to a metro number or add a metro number as a second virtual number. Unlike AT&T, if you change to a metro number, Vonage won't cost any more.

Thank you Keith & Bob,
Well I transferred a non-metro #. After all settles down, I'll see about a metro V #. I was unaware about the Vaccess number. I will look into it.
