What may be confusing here is that the measured service really has nothing to do with Vonage. To get Vonage to work, you need the DSL. The trouble is that unless you have a traditional phone line, many phone companies will disconnect your entire service - INCLUDING DSL, since DSL runs over the same wires as regular phone service.
The point of measured service - or what ever your local phone company offers as its absolute cheapest service - is that you will just have it in order to keep the line there for DSL. It could also come in handy for "real" 911 purposes as well as in the case that your power goes out and the Vonage adapter goes dark. The "measured service" would have a separate phone number - from the local phone company - which you could choose to give out to people or not (and just give out your Vonage number). |

You will really have 2 lines - just going over one set of wires. The phone company line - and number - uses the same phone technology that has been around since the 1800's. In addition to that, you get DSL delivered - which is "just" a data service (but you can[t get it in a lot of places without also paying for the phone line).
The DSL service supports internet access and any number of other things. The Vonage "number" comes to you over the data part of what you have - you can have as many "numbers" there as you want, since it is "just" data - not a physical line to the phone company. |
