The moto surfboard will work with Vonage. I use to use that modem. Though that modem has problems and it will drop its connection. You need to obtain a firmware update.

I've been using a Motorola SB5120 cable modem along with the Linksys/Vonage WRTP54G for about a year now with no compatability issues and with land-line sound quality.

If the modem is not faulty, the drop in the internet connection is normally due to loss of connectivity for whatever reasons with your ISP. Also, your ISP will automatically push a firmware update to you for the SB5120; Motorola does NOT provide firmware updates.

When I was losing connection with the sb5120, I contacted InSight Cable. They said there is a known issue with those and they are no longer providing them to the customers. The tech replaced my modem with a RCA and it works great. A friend of mine has Cox and had the same sc5120 and his was dropping to. He bought an Arris and it doesn't lose the connection. It's all up to you what you want to do.

Have your friend check his cable modem signal level's...specifically his Downstream Signal to Noise Ratio and Power Level and his Upstream Power Level. Type "192.168.100.1" without the quotes into his webbrowser then click on the "Signal" tab to get his results. If you would post back his results, I'm curious to know if his signal levels are acceptable.

Too bad. The Motorola SB5120 is probably one of the best cable modems out there. I've had 0 issues with the 5120 since I bought it a year and a half ago.
