I have been using Vonage for a few weeks. Here are my comments, perhaps this is of use to anyone thinking of signing up:
The Good:
- Voice quality is OK
- The feature set is good, and the web implementation works well.
- I have the unlimited plan because I call Europe a lot.
The Bad:
- The Linksys unit I bought at Circuit City was unusable - the MAC address was already registered to another Vonage customer. I had a hassle for two weeks before fixing this with an adapter Vonage shipped. Cost me several hours on the phone - a total drag.
- When I call Europe I can seldom get through - I get a message saying that the circuits are busy. I now use UnionTelecard.com for 2 cents a minute.
- There is no call blocking feature - this is especially annoying because telemarketers and pranksters are having a good time with our number. If this feature is not added I will go back to PacBell.
Vonage is a good start, but it is not there yet as a service.

I've had Vonage for 3 years and have not had trouble calling Europe. Specifically, to the southern UK (near Brighton, frequent calls) and Germany (Kaiserslautern area).
Where are you calling that you have trouble with?
As far as the call blocking/anonymous call rejection issue, I agree 100%.
I got a new number when I switched to Vonage and have had almost no problem with telemarketers. My prior carrier was SBC, I was listed in the phone book and I got a lot of phone spam. I think Vonage is better than the RBOCs on this issue, but I'd still like the option of ACR. |

My ACR solution has been to autoforward my calls to the Vonage customer service number if I get too many of them. It's all manual and that but think what Vonage would do if suddenly all their circuits were swamped because customers forwarded all their calls to them...
it's my own little way of fighting back. We're getting repeated Anon calls all night (some kid harrasser I guess). So I turn it on when we go to bed. |
