PostPosted: Thu Jan 18, 2007 2:39 pm    Post subject: Vonage with DirecTV all over the house Reply with quote Back to top

Here's my senario: I use a DSL service (upstairs office), DirectTV w/Tivo (downstairs family room), and two phones (one upstairs and one downstairs). I'm trying to figure out how to connect all of these with Vonage. Seems to me the Vonage base station has to be upstairs in the office where the DSL line is located. And that would take care of the upstairs phone line, too. I can use a wireless extension phone (5.2 gighz) for the downstairs phone. So, I'm ok there. But now I'm scratching my head as how to configure so that I can have my DirecTV dial in through Vonage so it can update itself and also for PPV. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Wardy

Modify the DTIVO anyway and be forever done with even HAVING a phone line connected to it. No need to worry about it then.

BTW, ordering PPV via DirecTV's web site is better anyway, because then the movie is viewable on ALL receivers on your account and not just one. Wink

Modify the DTivo? I'm not sure what you mean (sorry for my lack of understanding on this). I do understand about the PPV, though. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

Modifying = hacking. Note: I'm NOT referring to illegal hacking. Hacking TIVOs is a popular thing to do, as it allows one to do a lot of cool things with one's TIVO, from networking/connectivity, downloading recordings and burning to DVDs, TIVO-to-TIVO transferring, and many other cool backdoor tricks. One added bonus: doing this eliminates the need of your unit from ever having to be connected to a phone line. Smile

I'll check out the links, many thanks! I've also been wanting to burn from Tivo to DVD (without implicating my laptop). Maybe I'll figure out how to do that there as well. Thanks again! . . . Wardy

Actually, I'd recommend using your laptop. The end result is much better. I download recordings to my laptop all the time, then I use a program called TyTools to edit out commercials and create the final DVD.

Don't suppose you're a Mac user by chance (he says, wishingly!) Seems all the info on using the laptop with Tivo is PC based.

Actually, you can do things with MACs as well. It depends on what you're looking to do. I'd recommend searching around those forums and posting a thread about MACs if you don't find what you need.

If you've got pre-existing phone wiring in your house already that may have been connected to a "regular" phone company before you signed up for Vonage, you may or may not know that you can simply plug a modular phone cord from the Vonage base into any nearby modular jack, (after making sure that the former incoming land line from the phone company is disconnected where it comes into your house), and voila, you should have Vonage at any wired jack in the house. If you've got a jack anywhere near the Tivo or DSS receiver, just run a modular cable to them and plug them into the jack you already have.

There's a whole subset of this forum to discuss the ins and outs of using Vonage with house wiring and devices like Tivo's and satellite receivers at:

http://www.vonage-forum.com/forum12.html

But if you're asking how to make a hardwired connection to your Tivo or sat receiver from a wireless phone, I can't help you with that, can't say that I've ever seen a wireless phone with a hardwired output.

I had read about doing that (disconnecting the outside line and basically making the inside wireing of the house "vonage" wiring). However, I thought that you couldn't do that if you had DSL as the DSL runs thorugh that wiring, and comes from the outside?
