Hi all, I just singed up with Vonage - I haven't even used the system yet but I have a question about the Caller ID format: When you receive a call is the CID in the form of XXX-XXX-XXXX?
I have heard rumors that the Vonage CID format includes the country code, I.E a '1' for the U.S., as the first number of the CID information.
I have an extensive home automation system that is coded to run various tasks depending on the CID information of inbound callers and this only works if the CID is the normal 10 digit format.
Thank you for your help. |

Unfortunately, Vonage CID format is 11 digits, starting with 1 then the 3 digit area code and 7 digit number. |

My Vonage caller ID shows xxx-xxx-xxxx, not 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx.
Vonage service established Jan 04. Motorola VT 1005 V-tech 5831
I accepted default settings.
Maybe it's the TA or phone.... |

Thank you for the reply. I haven't installed my Vonage system yet - It hasen't arrived in the mail yet. I do however participate in several home automation forums, homeseer and JDS Stargate specifically and there were conversations about the Vonage CID numbers being preceded by the country code of 1.
From your response it looks like I am good to go.
Thank you again for the help. |

Are we talking about the CID that Vonage puts onto your (Vonage-connected) phone for incoming calls?
I get the 11 digits when I receive a call. Since Vonage lets you dial a US number with or without the 1 prefix, does it matter?
I honestly have no idea what others see when I call... |

Now this is exactly what I was speaking of: I don't really care what the Vonage box displays, what I do care about is the CID info passed to my in-house phone system after the Vonage TA. As I stated earlier, I have home automation controllers that are tied to the phone system and monitor the incoming call CID info looking for specific numbers to run code off of. If there is a 1 in front of the normal xxx-xxx-xxxx number my system will puke. |

Looking at my online call records on the Vonage website, for both incoming & outgoing, all the numbers are 11 digits. Whats interesting is the local calls that I make even show up in the "calls placed" log as 11 digits even though I only dial 7. |

I think it varies depending on which phone adapter you get. I have the Linksys RTP300 and (unfortunately) it shows 11 digits. I have the same phone system as qwertyui (Vtech 5831). I used to have a Linksys RT31P2 (which became defective and was replaced wit the RTP300) and I believe it showed 10 digits though I can't remember for sure. It's been so long now. Which phone adapter are they sending out these days? |

All,
I think that the best guess is that whether you see 11 or 10 digits on received call caller ID is driven by the particular telephone adapter or the firmware loaded to it. (As suggested by Maaz).
As far as what they see at the other end on caller ID when you call, I think it depends on their carrier/equipment. Calling Cingular from Vonage, my number shows 11 digits. Calling another Vonage customer it shows 10 digits. (Note, this other Vonage customer also uses a VT 1005). Calling a Nortel PBX connected to SBC, it also shows 10 digits.
My Activity record (call log) shows 11 digits for both sent and received calls (except international and 800).
If it's an 800 number, it drops the 1 and is 10 digits.
Oddly enough, the activity record truncates the international access code whether sent or recieved.
For example, if I get a call *from* the UK, it shows as 44xxxxxxxxx instead of 00144xxxxxxxxxx and if I call the UK, it shows as 44xxxxxxxx instead of 01144xxxxxxxx.
If they leave the 011 off international calls, why not leave the 1 off US/Canadian calls? |

011 isn't equivalent to 1.
011 is the code for dialing out of the US and Canada.
1 is the country code for the US and Canada.
To put it into SAT-speak:
1 : North America :: 44 : UK |
