As a new Vonage subscriber, when I got my initial package and set it up, I was a assigned a "virtual phone number." I was told that this was just temporary while they (Vonage) were in the process of transferring my old home number from my previous provider to Vonage. They said that it could take a few weeks. In actuality, it took on several days.

After the transfer was complete, my Vonage system was up and running using my previous phone number. Very nice!

However, whenever I logon to my Vonage account, I notice that the Virtual phone number still exists. In fact, if I dial that number, my phones all ring.

Does this virtual phone number remain permanent? Essentially, I have TWO different phone numbers for the SAME phone. Is this the way it's supposed to work? Odd.

They will probably get rid of that temp number at some point, because permanent virtual numbers cost extra. Also, the point of a virtual number is to have a number in a different area code/rate center that will access your primary number. That way you can have friends, family, or customers call you for free.

I agree that eventually your virtual number will be removed. I think b/c it took such a short time for the transfer to take place, it probably has not made its way through the system to remove that virtual number.

In my case, it took 25 days like they said and I didn't even bother looking for that virtual number since I never gave it out to anyone and didn't call it myself.

But it went away and my account now only has 1 number.

so don't worry about it. It's their responsibility to get rid of it. You should not be charged anything extra b/c it comes with all new accounts that have a number porting order.

The standard timeframe Vonage claims is 7 days after your number port is completed the virtual number will drop off of your account. If it has been past 7 days I would contact Vonage to make sure of two things:
1) They have the number port marked as completed in their system
2) The virtual number you are seeing is actually a temporary virtual number and they haven't accidentally selected this as a permanant virtual number.

The first one wouldn't be so bad as long as everything is working. The second one would be something you definitely want to get resolved as if this is the case you would see a $4.99 charge for that virtual number on your next bill and would have to go through the process of speaking to someone at Vonage who is willing to credit that back to you.
