Has anyone tried VPNing with the RT31P2 in this senario?
Internet->RT31P2->PC/Phone (Phone and PC plugged into the RT31P2)
I'm wondering because the fix apparently to get VPNs to work is to bump the adaptor behind the router. Since the RT31P2 is a router/adaptor do VPN connections work or..? |

As of Firmware 1.24, the VPN Passthrough works if you are making a VPN connection through the router to a VPN Server. It does not work if you're hosting a VPN Server behind the router. This is common with early firmware in Linksys routers. While you can foward VPN port 1723 through, it won't forward the necessary GRE protocol. Only TCP and UDP ports will forward. So the VPN passthrough option on the security menu is just for show right now. |

Has anyone tried 2 VPNs with this router/ata? I have 2 concurrent IPsec sessions in progress connected out currently through my wireless G Netgear router, which has 5 objects on the lan, 3 hard wired, 2 wireless. I have always put my ata behind the router. I had the Moto 1005V to start with and that didn't support IPsec passthru, so that went behind.
I have had volume problems dialing out (mine is fine - half the people I call cannot hear me very well).
Vonage Tech support sent me the new RT31P2 today. I put it behind - same problem...
Does anyone know if this router will support multiple sessions? The doc suggests it might, but that's all... If it will, I will change my config so that the RT31P2 is first, which wll allow its QoS to function. Maybe that'll fix it. I don't really want to go through all that hassle of daisychaining my Netgear to find out that it won't support it... |

I can't believe it. I have spent 2 days trying to figure out why I could not make a VPN connection to my VPN server behind my RT31P2 router, only to find out finally on this board that the passthrough setting is just for "show". I contacted Linksys support and all they did was refer me to a link that says how to configure port forwarding which I had told them I already did. They never mentioned protocol 43 is not able to be routed! How do you get a firmware upgrade? I don't see them on the Linksys site for this router? Maybe there is a newer firmware than 1.24.xx??
Thanks so much for your posting. Any idea if Linksys is going to support this in an update soon? |

The latest firmware is 1.26.01, as far as I know. To upgrade the firmware, you'll have to call Vonage and request it. In my experience, I've been able to get through tech support a lot faster by calling at 4am or so. |

Thanks, but I called support and the latest firmware for this VoIP router is 1.24.xx. Both Vonage and Linksys tech support said that the firmware does not yet support GRE PPTP passthrough. Also, Vonage said they push out f/w upgrades automatically in the AM hours when f/w is available (kind of strange that they don't even notify you first, that's scary).Vonage actually recommended that I buy a new router and put the VoIP router behind it. I already tried that and when the VoIP router was behind another router, the phone service was very bad both directions. It is very good when the VoIP router is directly connected to the ISP. Si, I guess some of us are just stuck at the mercy of the update if it ever comes. |

1.26.01 is the latest firmware and you do have to contact vonage to get it (2.0.12 is the voice version). As far as I can tell, it fixed a port disconnect issue a lot of users were having. so if you call and say you're having that issue, they may send it. also, the RT31P2's that they're sending out now come with the 1.26.01 firmware. |

I have 1.26.01 and I don't see any difference. I still can't connect to a VPN behind the router, even though all other port forwarding works. Apparently, PPTP passthrough is still only for show. |

You are correct. I verified with Vonage and Linksys support that this does not work. They both said you will have to buy a router that works and place the VoIP router behind it. However, for me, voice quality is poor when I do this. Linksys did not have any idea as to when they expect a fix if ever. |

I already had the Cisco ATA. I bought the RT31P2 specifically for the QoS feature, which requires all traffic to be routed through the device. I also did my homework before purchasing. I downloaded the manual and checked the config pages to ensure that PPTP passthrough was a feature.
Having PPTP passthrough as a configuration option when it doesn't work at all, and then saying that they will never support it, borders on being fraudulent. They should:
* Remove the feature from the UI
* Remove references to it from the manual
* Clearly state that the RT31P2 does NOT support PPTP passthrough.
Here's and advertising slogan:
"Buy the new Linksys/Vonage RT31P2! Great voice quality! Be hosed if you ever want to support the most popular form of remote access!"[/list] |
