OK, not sure where to go with this...I am connected through a dsl telephone modem in a foreign country.
We are able to receive Vonage calls in, but not make Vonage calls out.
Wondering if the local telco is blocking outgoing calls.
Speed test is around 200 KBPS up and down.
Local Telco recently introduced it's own version of Voip.
Vonage customers who are connected using a TV cable modem are not experiencing this problem.
I'm not very technically educated, re the ports etc used. Is it possible for the local Telco to block the Vonage out, yet let calls in? And also at the same time allow their own Voip service to operate..... Question
If they are blocking certain ports, is it possible to change those ports that Vonage is using?
Thanks

It would be instructive to run a test call to Boston at www.testyourvoip.com, and also to run the forum VoIP/speed test. If you can run both of these, odds are that the ISP is not blocking. Otherwise, perhaps they are.

Thank you, the first test I got this message, tried several more times and the test does not complete, just blank page and message says test, 'done', so it appears something is up.
C&P from test page
(The test agent could not connect to Sydney using the standard SIP port (5060), but was able to connect and run a test to another location via an alternate port (6000). This indicates that one of the following may be true:

* If you have a Voip Service, your VoIP/Phone Adaptor may have reserved the standard SIP port and is filtering out our SIP packets. Consider temporarily removing the Adaptor from your configuration and re-running the test.
* Your Personal Firewall, if you are using Windows XP, may be filtering the SIP port used for communication.
* Either your home firewall or your broadband provider's firewall is blocking the SIP port used for communication.)

Is it possible to change my Vongage port from 5060?

What device do you have? If it is one that you got around 2004-2005 it will be using port 5060-5061. All of the newer devices are using port 10000 for SIP traffic and most of the old devices that could be were also migrated over to port 10000. Your ISP could be using some detection method to block Voip traffic outbound or there could even be a conflict with your DSL modem, what type of modem is it?

I'm still using the Cisco ATA 186,adaptor, as it has been working well for several years.
The Telco DSL modem is a Speedstream 5667.
The Speed stream dsl router and the Cisco adapter have been working together since original installation.
I also have a Linksys/Vonage WRT54GP2 in my network, but am only using the wireless router side of it for wireless networking. The VIOP side is not activated by Vonage.
Strange thing is, this am the system working normally.
I think that the local Telco is messing with their side, as there have been no probs with Vonage using cable modems, only DSL modems.
Local Telco has launched their own Voip service and trying to force a switch to their more expensive service.

Since you already have a 2nd Vonage adapter you can rule out the ATA as the cause by activating the WRT54GP2 and trying that. You can do that right from Vonage.com, just click on "Activate retail device". If you want to go back to your ATA, just go into your web-account and click on add-ons. There is a feature called move a line where you can assign your number back to the ATA if you wish. As a further aside I believe the ATA is one of the devices that is hard coded to port 5060-5061 for SIP traffic, if they are infact blocking these standard Voip ports then switching to the WRT54GP2 may allow you to send that traffic through the port that the newer devices are using, 10000. If they are blocking the traffic via some other means, than you still may be out of luck.

Thanks for that info. I reckon that they are using 'some other means' as it seems that traffic from several different types of adaptors/routers has been affected, the Cisco, the Linksys and the Motorola, anything that has been connected to the telco DSL line.
Cable subscribers were not affected though.
