Hi,
At work for a number of years I have used various Cisco IP based phones and I love the phones. Since I have Vonage at home, I was wondering is there any way I can use the same phones with Vonage instead of the "regular" phone?

The two models as an example that I am thinking of are:
Cisco Unified IP Phone 7971G-GE Cisco Unified IP Phone 7971G-GE
and the Linksys One

No. At the present time, the main account must be on a Vonage provided device.

There were rumors about a year ago that Vonage was going to start making the SIP parameters available for the main account. This rumor appears to be false.

You can program the SIP parameters for a Softphone into a device of your own choosing, although it's not clear that the terms actually allow it, and it's certainly not going to be possible to get support from Vonage for softphone account problems on anything other than an officially supported softphone. And, of course, you'll only get 500 minutes of outbound calling for free, but all the inbound you want, on your own device via the Softphone account. You can still make unlimited calls on your other phone(s) on the Vonage device.

Your main Vonage line is a regular SIP accout, but without the Vonage SIP credentials for the main line, you're stuck using their cheap ATAs. Pay attention to what I just said. If you know what a Cisco 7xxx series phone is, you might have the skills needed to get what you want. Wink

FWIW, Vonage uses Cisco 7940 phones in their offices...and yes, some of them are on Vonage's servers. When I was doing some advanced troubleshooting with Vonage, we experimented with various ATAs and SIP phones to determine where exactly the problems were occurring.

That's all the detail I can & will give.

Thanks for the response; I understand the issue with them not opening up the SIP details.

Another couple of questions:
1. I do have a softphone (with the 500 mins), so if I want to use that where do I find the SIP details for that?
2. Can I setup something like asterisk and use the aforementioned phone with that? Or another SIP provider - any recommendations?

If you really want to bring your own device, you may want to consider another provider. I don't think we're really supposed to talk about other providers in the forum, but if you PM me, I'll give you a recommendation on one.
