Many (most) 800 Service providers charge a surcharge of 25 to 50 cents per call to the 800 customer when a call is placed from a payphone. This is allowed and common because payphone providers are allowed to charge the 800 carrier the a fee to compensate them for placing the call, similar to the fee the payphone owner would have charged the caller if the call had been a local call.

A year ago the question "Does Vonage charge its TollFreePlus customers a surcharge for calls placed from payphones" was asked in this forum, but was never answered, nor can I find the answer in the TollFreePlus FAQ, by searching the forum, or with a Google search.

Does anyone who is reading this forum actually have a TollFreePlus number, and have you placed a call to your number from a regular phone company payphone or a privately owned payphone?

My understanding on this issue is that the fee is imposed only on pay phone usage. Regular phone lines whether it is the telco or Vonage or any other Voip service, should result in no surcharges. In all the toll free calls I've made, I was never charged a surcharge.

I know this for a fact b/c when I use my prepaid calling card from a hotel telephone or my home phone, I do not get charged extra minutes but when I use it at a pay phone, I lost a significant chunk of extra minutes for using a pay phone. So for what it's worth, that's been my experience.

If I understand your reply correctly, you're saying that customers are not charged the surcharge as a $ line item, but instead are charged some number of minutes, using up some of their included minutes, or resulting in additional overage minutes if you're already beyond the 100.

Or are you even talking about Vonage TollFreePlus at all? Your experience does not appear to be with Vonage, but rather with a prepaid calling card.

I would really like to know exactly what the Vonage TollFreePlus pricing is, not guesses based on other providers. On Vonage TollFreePlus, does the first minute from a payphone cost 1 minute plus a surcharge, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or what?

It's annoying that this information is not in the TollFreePlus FAQ.

I'm so sorry. My bad. I misread your initial post. I cannot speak for calling the Vonage TollFree number. I presume that there is no surcharge if the call was originally made from a home or regular land line. I'm pretty sure this is the case since they market it as such. But I agree with you that they do not mention anything about a call from a pay phone.

I would recommend a call to Vonage on that one. I have not seen a post like yours before and apparently the previous post was never answered which suggests that people on this forum have not had to deal with it.

I'm amazed that this forum is unable to produce a definitive answer to this question from a Vonage customer using this forum who has TollFreePlus service. I really might order a Vonage TollFreePlus number, but I need to know the answer to this question! I find it very hard to believe that there is no payphone surcharge, but the information on Vonage's web site says nothing about it.

I'm a bit taken aback by your post.

We are an independent forum of people who like/love Vonage and want to help others set it up so that they get a good quality connection.

Your question is not about setting up your connection or troubleshooting a poor one. Call Vonage and ask them since none of us do any billing for them. Call their billing dept and not their customer service and maybe you'll get an answer you need.

But please don't post comments like yours. It's uncalled for here. None of us work for Vonage as far as I know and we are just here as a volunteer community helping others with basically troubleshooting issues.

I didn't mean to insult anyone. But I'm amazed that no one on this forum appears to actually have a TollFreePlus number and has looked at his bill after a call is placed from a pay phone. I'm not the first person to ask the question, and the question was not answered the previous time it was asked either.

I don't see anything that would make me believe that this forum is only about "setting up your connection or troubleshooting a poor one". I believe it is about Vonage service in general.

I have called billing. They say there is no extra charge. But that would not be the first time they would be wrong. They have the same script to read from that is on their web site.

Maybe Vonage believes that few enough calls will come from payphones that they do not need to bill these charges back to their customers. But if a customer receives a lot of calls from payphones, since Vonage has to pay the payphone operator about 55 cents for each call, Vonage could lose a lot of money.

I don't know how many people here use the tollfreeplus feature but from the lack of response, apparently not many.

If I were you, I'd get the billing person's name and also make a copy of the website that says that there is no charge even if the call originates from a pay phone.

then you are covered if they charge you.

I just don't see any other options on the table for you at this time since no one is answering your post.

If the billing person is wrong, then at least you have a name and some recourse to argue that you were misinformed hence due for a credit. Then I'd cancel it if they charge extra for a call orginating from a pay phone.

the reason why I was offended was b/c your question is essentially a detailed billing question and it should be answered by the billing dept at Vonage and not here. If the billing dept said that there is no extra charge, then you note the name and make sure you have yourself covered.

Trouble is, the website says nothing about pay phones, and the person in billing simply re-read the script with what the charges are, and would never answer my question about whether there was a surcharge with anything other than repeating what the normal charges are.

I have had a Vonage Toll-free number for over two years now and have never been charged more then the $5 bucks a month except when I run over the allotted 100 minutes. I'd test your theory, but I haven't run across a pay phone in eons. If you want my number to test it out PM me and I'll send it to you.
