I have been using Vonage for over 2 years using a Motorola Modem. Over the last couple of weeks, I have been experiencing frequent loss of internet access and have to power cycle my modem and keep it off for up to 15 minutes to get back internet access. Now I have been unable to get internet access even after turning off the modem for hours. I do have internet access if I connect one of my two PCs directly to the cable modem.

I am not an expert in checking IP addresses and the likes but any instructions to help me out will will be appreciated.

My current setup is:

Internet--->Motorola Modem--->RT300---> 2 PCs

There is one simple way to check. Plug one of your computers directly to the modem and see if you lose your internet at all during the day. If it does, then it's an issue with your ISP and your modem. If however, you do not lose any internet connectivity, then most likely, your rtp300 is starting to break down.

95% of the time, I've seen posts of losing the phone connection and rarely having the phone work but not internet. Does your phone work even when you internet is down when plugged into the rtp300? Then if it still works, chances are your router is starting to die a slow death.

Mundy5:

Thanks for your comments. I connected one of the PCs directly to the modem last night and when I left for work this morning I was still having internet access. Will check again when I get home in about 2 hours, and I expect it to be fine. Yes, I do get phone connection through the RT300 even when I do not have internet access. Although of late my wife has been complaining of lost calls and poor clarity.

Assuming the worst case that I need to replace the RT300, what is the most current "recommended" version of router to buy? Can I buy it from Best Buy and the likes? Can Vonnage pay for a replacement Router?

THanks

Not sure how this relates to my current problems. I recently added a second PC and for both PCs, even when i am connected to the Internet, one of the signs on the tool bar at the bottom right of both PCs will indicate something "Network plug not connected" even when both network plugs are connected to the RT300

Let me write about this post first before going back to your previous one.

The indicator that the network plug is not connected could be triggered by a number of things. Most obviously if you don't have a physical plug but it also can happen if for some reason your modem or in this case, your rtp300, your router loses it's internet connectivity. So it doesn't always indicate a physcial disconnect.

There a number of Vonage devices people seem to recommend around here. The most common one appears to be the latest PAP2 device but this one is not a router so it has no connections for computers. You will need to purchase a new router to make it work since it is only the telephone adapter. I use the rt31p2 and it has been fine for me and it is both a router and a phone adapter much like your rtp300. I believe you can purchase these at Best Buy. Don't get the dlink vwr. I have read a number of posts that clearly shows that it has a great deal of bugs yet to be sorted out.

Yes, you can purchase a lot of these routers and phone adapters at these stores.

I believe that Vonage will only replace a router if they and the key word is they determine that it is broken and that it is under warranty. I believe it is under warranty for only a short amount of time. I recommend that you double check with Vonage directly.

Yeah, that last issue seals the deal. Your RT300 is getting ready to take a dive. Here is why. Network cable unplugged comes up if the computer doesn't detect a connection. There are a few reasons why that would happen. The most common reasons are:

1. Your router is dropping the connection.
2. The NICs are dropping connection.
3. The cables themselves are bad.

Let's think about probability. It is highly unlikely that two NICs would be bad, and highly unlikely that two cables would be bad. It is likely, however, that one router is going south. Also, if cables are bad, then it just doesn't work, there is no in between with those unless there is a split somewhere and the broken wires are rubbing together. Again, unlikely that it would happen to two of them at the same time.

Guys:

Thanks for the input. Your analyses points to a bad Router. I will get a new Router/Phone Adapter and replace it. I will keep you guys posted.

Ok 4 hours later, I bought a PAP2 Linksis Vinnage Adapter at Wall Mart and connected it with a Linksys Wireless Router and both Internet and Phone are working fine. I was on the phone for 60 minutes with Vonnage who walked me through the entire process including registering the new MAC address and connecting the wireless router with the new PAP2 Adapter.

Thanks again

Does anyone know the difference between the Linksys Adapters PAP2 and PAP2v2? I bought the PAP2 Adapter and based on pictures of both the only difference I saw was the PAP2v2 Ethernet and Phone slots are color coded (Blue and Green). Any reason for me to return the PAP2 and replace with the PAP2v2?

Thanaks

The PAP2 and PAP2V2 use two different chipsets. The PAP2 uses a discontinued chipset, ESS. The version 2 uses the AR7 chipset. Also, version 2 doesn't have STUN (Simple Traversal of UDP through NAT), because of that, Version 2 may have problems operating behind a NAT, which a lot of routers have set up. I suppose a way around that would be setting up a DMZ on the router to allow version 2 complete access to the internet. So, as of right now, the PAP2 is better and more convenient to use than version 2.
