When you connect your phone, I'm assuming it's a hard connection correct? My question is this. My internet modem and router are upstairs in my office. I know I'll want to have a phone in the kitchen. Will I have to get a wireless phone that I will have to walk up and down the stairs to charge because there's no way to connect directly in the kitchen? What are my options? Many thanks in advance.

If you have phone wiring throughout your house, you can disconnect it from external land lines and use it to distribute the Vonage service throughout the house. Of course, you'll need a phone jack close to the router and Vonage adapter. The hard wiring forum is devoted to discussions of doing that and has a good tutorial "sticky" posted at the top of the forum.

Cordless phones are another option. The base would have to be in your office, but there are phones available with multiple handsets and charging bases.

Before signing up, run the forum Voip test and also run a test call to Boston at www.testyourvoip.com . Those tests will give you a good idea of how well your internet service will work with Voip.

I would say the heck with re-wiring, unless you want to, that is!

I have a GE 5.8 Ghz digital cordless set. Comes with two phones, one basestation (to plug into the Vonage Adapter) and one basestation for only charging. I connected the main base to Vonage, and kept it in my den with the Vonage device/computer. I put the other one in the bedroom, and it works just fine. I think that set is expandable up to 4 handsets. If you're lazy like I am, this was a great solution.

I certainly agree with Dave -- a good cordless phone with multiple handsets (and charging stations) should take care of most needs!

I do want to clarify though . . . using existing wiring for distributing Vonage is not really "rewiring". We're USUALLY only talking about disconnecting a couple of wires and then plugging a phone cord in from your Vonage adapter to an existing phone jack. Not what I'd call rewiring!

I just did the testyourvoip test and my best rating was only 3.9. I have a fast cable connection. Is that usually what the results are? Is it a low score? Before I choose to try Vonage I just wanna make sure the call quality isn't gonna be horrible.

3.9 is a very good score. Don't forget to run the forum test as well (menu, top left, Vonage information/VoIP speed test).

i also went with an expandable base unit because if for some reason i didn't want Voip anymore, i didn't want to have to worry about rewiring everything properly, because if you leave the service, you're on your own.
