PostPosted: Sat Jan 06, 2007 1:46 am    Post subject: PAP2 adapter with Linksys EZXS55W switch,BSNL-ADSL in india Reply with quote Back to top

Hi

I had sent a PAP2 adapter to my father in Hyderabad, India along with a Linksys 5 port ethernet switch. Now we followed all the instructions in the documentation provided and downloaded from the Vonage website. I went thru the trouble shooting steps too but haven't been able to figure out the issue here. we power on the DSL modem to begin with, then ethernet switch. We check the internet connectivity on a PC. After this we power on the phone adapter.
The power light Blinks and the internet light is stable. the phone 1 light never turns on as it is supposed to.
Using the Interactive Voice Response Menu, I found the IP address of the adapter (192.168.15.254 default). The IP address of the PC is 169.254.26.7 and My gateway IP address is 59.93.80.97 (dynamic). The gateway IP address on the adapter is 0.0.0.0. I figured this could be the issue and disabled DHCP. after this I set the IP address of the phone adapter to 169.254.26.5. This worked. After this I tried to set the gateway IP address to the same as the computer but wasn't able to. even though I enter the IP address and save it, it always saves it as 0.0.0.0.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be appreciated

Thanks
Viji

So if the adapter is working, what is the problem at this point?

I mwant i was able to set the IP address. But not the default dateway. it stays at 0.0.0.0

the problem still persists. Power LED flashing, ethernet LED is stable and Line 1 LED never comes on. There is no dial tone on the phone and a recorded message, "Vonage device not able to connect to network", is heard constantly.

Tell us about the ethernet switch. Is is just a switch, or is it a router? I gather that when you check for internet connectivity with the PC, it's OK. Doe the switch have an admin page? Can you log on to that?

What happens if you don't plug the PC into the switch, and just re-cycle the modem, switch, and adapter? Before checking this, turn DHCP back on in the PAP2.

I have checked connecting the PAP2 to the switch/ router without the computer and also tried the PAP2 directly to the modem. It doesn't work with either of the two cases.

I thought that this was a router but now am not sure. This is the link from where i purchased the Linksys router from:

http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-EZXS55W-EtherFast-5-Port-Workgroup/dp/tech-data/B00003006E/ref=de_a_smtd/103-2584713-2366231

i am not able to get the IP address of the linksys "router". When I open a command prompt and do a ipconfig, i get two sets of numbers, one for the LAN
169.254.28.7 and one for that says BSNL data one as 59.93.72.42

when i try checking the routers login, http://192.168.1.1 or 169.254.28.7 or 59.93.72.42, i get a page cannot be displayed error.

This appears to be a switch, not a router. The fact that you're supposed to be able to look at its setup and can't is pretty revealing. I'd replace it with a real router. Then you might want to look at this thread (and many others that a search will turn up) on getting the router to work properly with BSNL:

The issue was that he needed to double click on a BSNL software to connect to the internet everytime. it wasn't an "always on" situation and hence the Vonage device wasn't being assigned a default gateway.

He resolved this issue by storing the login information on the ADSL router (Smartax MT882). The person who set up his DSL was able to take care of this in a matter of minutes.

Thanks for the feedback. So how does the ethernet switch fit into all of this?

Yeah

Spent a couple of hours on a "conference" (more relay) call with a Tech support rep of Vonage (based in Chennai, India). The modem, smartax MT 882, is a modem cum router. So the switch fitted in perfect.

Thanks for the help
